The health department minister, Brígida Mendoza, for the Canarian government announced yesterday in parliamentary meetings that “in the first 8 months of the year, Canaries has reduced the pharmaceutical costs by and 26.021.167,91 Euros, which represents a decrease of over 7% in comparison with last year. Added to which more importantly you need to bear in mind that in the year 2010 Canaries was the autonomous region who managed to reduce their pharmaceutical costs”.
According to Brígida Mendoza, "these results were managed because the number of prescriptions given out has been controlled and also the cost of each prescription.. As well as the improvement in seven areas of health services including which medication was prescribed, gulcemia tests, controlling the price of dietary health products and incontinence pads”.
"We are achieving something very complicated in the health service, which is reduce costs whilst improving quality” she assured. And then reminded that “Historically the Canaries has always been the community with the highest pharmaceutical costs except in 2007, when it decreased a little. That said in 2008 the costs rose 9.28 % when the average increase in Spain was 6.95 and it increased 7.21% in 2009 when the average was 4.47%. We have started some controls since then that the sate ordered and with these measures managed a 5.49% decrease. It is true electronic prescriptions were introduced in 2009 but they were not completed until 2011, during that year they continued prescriptions were also bought out”, she explained showing that higher quantities of money could have been saved in the health service if previous managers had introduced more money saving formulas.
For the health service the most important fact is that “for the first time we have achieved and monthly bill which is under 40 million Euros. In September the bill was just over 36 million Euros” Mendoza confirmed.
"The good numbers” which support the department are also better if you bear in mind that in the last quarter of last year they managed to reduce costs by more then 130 million Euros, which means that they present year added to last year the savings could reach 200 million Euros which is 33.340.000.000 million of the old pesetas.
Also the perspectives for savings next year look good. As from November the doctor obligation is to prescribe the main drug and not a medication, which according to central government could mean, “a saving like we have never seen”, in the words of national health minister, Leire Pajín.
In any case, Mendoza assured that to continue advancing the reduction of costs for pharmacy drugs, “we are prioritising the electronic prescriptions and specialised treatment. Also the strengthening of the information data base Portal del Prescriptor", this is a web for doctors which they can help with the control of costs for prescriptions.
