The north yesterday called in Puerto de la Cruz for a sports harbour, a fishing harbour and a commercial harbour in a historic protest. More that 15.000 people according to the calculations of EL DÍA and the Puerto de la Cruz local police, they met in the Plaza de Europa to call to the authorities to start the work in 2012.
An hour before the official start of the concentration there were already thousands of people in the square. Up to 6pm, the streets around the square forming a human sea which more than fulfilled the expectations of the organisers.
For almost 2 hours, in Puerto de la Cruz you could hear chants like "¡El Norte unido jamás será vencido!", "¡Sí, sí, sí, el muelle ya está aquí!", "¿Dónde está Paulino?"-Where is Paulino o "¡Queremos el muelle!" - We want a harbour. As well, there were dozens of cards and you could also wee shirts with messages such as "Muelle ya" – Harbour now or "Por un muelle como es debido en el Puerto" – Puerto deserves a Port(play on words).
The singer Arturo Castillo was present for the protest, as were residents of all ages and politics. At the meeting to call for a new harbour for Puerto de la Cruz were the mayors and nacionalists Marcos Brito, Isaac Valencia, Haroldo Martín and Mariano Pérez; the socialist Ignacio Rodríguez, and popular party members Manuel Domínguez & Milagros Pérez. Also present were candidates for the party 20N and island councillors Aurelio Abreu (PSC) & Antonio Alarcó (PP).
In the meeting could also be seen ex-mayors Hermógenes Pérez and Lola Padrón, and a multitude or municipal councillors from La Orotava, Los Realejos & San Juan de la Rambla.
The organisers “la Plataforma del Norte” and “Círculo de Empresarios del Norte”, felt the number of persons there were more than 20.000 people. The march took place with no incidents and with a great atmosphere more like a party than anything else, it turned into the biggest meeting ever held in the north of the island. Up to the 30/10/2011 the biggest meeting in the north had been in Icod on the 01/02/2000 to request more security for school transport and to remember a child who had died in a school transport accident. On that occasion more then ten thousand people met in Buen Paso.

Reactions
"Un muelle ya" – A harbour now
The president of the North platform , Francisco Acevedo, and the secretary of the circle of business people in the north, Pedro González, read at the meeting two manifests. Acevedo called for " A harbour that can house a fishing boat to a cruise liner” and he lamented the fact that the north had been abandoned as “it dies day after day”. González underlined that “the north has spoken and left clear that it needs a harbour now”. As well, he asked “if all the politicians can see the necessity, why isn't it built immediately”.
"Fuerza popular" – popular effort
The Puerto mayor, Marcos Brito (CC), underlined yesterday that “we need to channel the force that we see today so it can overcome existing obstacles and the new port can be a reality as soon as possible”. According to him, “We can't stop with this meeting, tomorrow we have to go back to work so the harbour is built”.
"Una voz única" – a single voice
The mayor from Los Realejos, Manuel Domínguez (PP), affirmed that “ the North has spoken together and with one voice, party colours have been left on one side and today it is clear that Puerto de la Cruz is the heart of the north”. Antonio Alarcó (PP) pointed out the help that will be provided for, “This basic need for the county”.
"Éxito rotundo" – Complete success
The speaker from La Matanza, Ignacio Rodríguez (PSC), qualified the meeting as, “a complete and total success” and reminded that “to build a harbour here is fair”. For him, “The people have spoken and this is what they want. We are at the point where building can be built in the north and there can be some compensation for the imbalance of investment on the island there has been over the last 25 years”.
