Ok - got a significant birthday coming up in January (KB - you're already on a warning so no derogatory remarks here or that window will be closed when I chuck you through it!!). Hubby has the original Galaxy Tab P1000, daughter has the original iPad.

From personal experience or just because you've seen one you would like, what tablet pc would you recommend?

Monika - I'm guessing you're recommendation would be the iPad 2?! Anyone else care to share?

:D :p :D

The new Kindle Fire has just been launched in US (or about to be) apparently it strongly competes with the ipad but is a lot cheaper! not over here yet though but Google it to see what you think!:hello:

Thanks Sue! Had a look and it does look promising - especially if the UK price mirrors the US one. Only drawback I can see is the lack of 3G on the current model.. I'll put it on my list to watch..! :D

ave a look at the new Barnesd & Noble Nook Color which is likely to be announced on 7th Nov. The present model interests me but with a new one the horizon I,m gonna wait. Whichever I would then have it rooted using an Android based SD Card rooting leaving a machine worthy of its very less costs. I really don,t see the advantage of having a 3G Tablet machine when you probably have a telephone which you are happy with!
Of course it does really come down to 2 things. What will it be used for and the comparative costs with other units. For a cheepo then Archos produce great little machines, they just don,t carry a "name".

I need mine to have Internet, Android and a decent amount of memory (64GB ish which at the moment seems a bit rare) or at least have upgradeable memory and also good battery life.
Had a look in Carrefour today. Ipad 2 is definitely the nicest looking but I definitely prefer Android so will keep looking. Can you put a sim card in the Eee pad?
What office software options are there for tablets? (Just basic office functionality.)

Added after 7 Hours 25 minutes:

Went to the shops today for a leisurely stroll (as you do) and lo and behold, there was a Carphone Warehouse and an Apple Store in situ... Had a look at a variety of tabs and have to say, it's looking more and more like VW could be right....! For all that the other tablets might be a more user friendly size, the one thing that the iPad has over them all is that as good as the Android operating system might be, the best apps are designed with Apple in mind.... and the fact that the iPad 2 does FaceTime in HD makes it a clear winner for me (as I frequently travel on my own to Tenerife and use FaceTime on my iPhone and iTouch).... Now comes the really, really, really hard bit - waiting....... :spin:

I kind of think that these tablets are nothing more than a marketing ploy

Marketing you into thinking that they are cool to be seen with and to make you want to purchase something that you don't really need.

I've used one on a couple of occasions and in a nutshell they just feel totally impractical unless i guess you read books all the time...

They are useful as a they are smaller and lighter than a laptop and also have a longer battery life. Thats the attraction for me.
The Samsung Galaxy is probably the one I´ll go for.

exactly, they're an under performing laptop . . . . . so look for a really small laptop, there are quite a few good 'uns out there now, small enough to put into a 'large' pocket !

I agree that they are mostly impractical - but for the gadget freak (para mi) it's a must have item. I DO have an ereader, and on holiday I read a lot.. so it will get well used.

The main objection I originally had against the iPad, was that like iPhones and iPods, they relied in connecting to your computer/laptop for their content to be transferred. Now, with the advent of iOS5 and the iCloud, that's not as much of an issue.

Hubby's Galaxy Tab is ace and I DO like it, but the android apps are somewhat buggy and he frequently has to switch it off/on when it freezes. Generally, the apps for Apple products are better, and according to hubby, a lot cheaper too.....

Of course, the fact that as a family we have a number of Apple products means there are plenty of chargers and a number of accessories we can use!! :D ;) :D

I guess it must depend on the type of app you're buying - hubby tells me that an app he got for his iPhone was around a quid or less and the same one for his tab was 3 or 4 times that amount..

It truly is ridiculous that android smartphone numbers far outstrip the number of iPhones worldwide yet the number and quality of android apps lags behind!! Developers seem to worship more at the Apple altar..

As of October, Android has surpassed apple so far as the number of apps being downloaded. It also has the most free apps although apple has the most apps overall. This is projected to change withing the next 7 to 8 months though.

The Android platform was responsible for 44 percent of all mobile app downloads in the second quarter of 2011, as opposed to iOS’s 31 percent,

The reason, in my opinion, as to why there are fewer apps for Android is quite simple. It needs to suit the workings of so many different manufacturers and their machines whereas Apple does not. This had caused a delay in providing suitable apps. using Android, Also, Android appealed to the "Geeky" set originally whereas Apple appealed to a different, faithful (somewhat forced on them imho) set of customers. I,m very much in the non-Apple crowd and therefor I tend to ignore what iMachines can or cannot do and relies on Android satisfying my needs. Above all that, for me a Tablet would be very much something I would want to tinker about with rather than everything being set out on a plate and paying for that although, the Samsung Galaxy,s price is out of line. If any "named" machine hit the market at under 200 quid, that machine would outsell all the others put to-gether. The HP debacle proved that to me. Nothing i,ve read on here or elsewhere, in the last few days, have changed my opinion of the Nook Color duly rooted.

I've had a look and although it looks good, it's principal design is based around the ereader function. Can't see many places in the UK selling it other than online - would need to be able to hold it and check it out to see if it could be a contender....

They're selling a 'refurbished' one on a site called overstock.com (US) for $169......

Impressive amount of memory space on there! I actually looked at one of these, but I felt that the system seemed slow and not very responsive. To me it looked and felt a bit on the cheap side.. Having read some of the reviews, there seems to be some charging issues.. I see also that it doesn't have 3G although it can be tethered.... TBH if I was to go for an Android tab, it would probably be one of the Samsung Galaxy ones..

All the people in the "know" , Cnet, PC Advisor and the like, highly rate this machine, having used it extensively! As I have said time and again, it depends on whether you want to be spoon-fed ala Apple, or like me, try out different things, learning more as you go along!

I,m currently awaiting the news on whether a new "Nook Color" is being announced later this week to-gether with the latest Android O/s, Ice Cream Sandwich becoming available to do rooting. So, unlikely to make a final decision for a couple of weeks! I,m in no hurry and I,m trying to achieve getting a machine at less than half the price of the Apple and Samsung offerings.

The names all relate to "sweets", ala Cupcake
Donut
Eclair
FroYo
Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich and the like.
The advantage is quite clear. Improvements, extensions, additions like when Windows goes from one system to another, XP then Vista and then Win.7 and next year Win.8!

I see!.... Did wonder about FroYo - never heard of it/one..! A rather unique naming system.. I admit, I was almost swayed by the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 but figured if I was going for that size of tab, I'd be as well going for the iPad... Also, the 10.1 has no expandable memory....

I have the advantage of the passing of time, which in this market is the downfall of many, and to-day I think that the Androids have taken over with this new machine. Just look at its specs and, pound for pound, has to have the BEATING of the iPad. It certainly beats the Galaxay!

It is worth pointing out the the modern Samsung range of phones and tablets can source a USB stick i.e. you can plug a memory stick into it to upload photos etc

You thus, might be able to plug in a dongle too.

Can't answer that for you but some smartphones can create a wifi hotspot, allowing you to pick up the signal on a tablet or similar device. You DO have to be careful that your phone plan has enough data for both devices though.... Just a thought....

I am sure that 10 gb will not be enough. You always use more than you think you will. Don't sign any contract until someone replies who really knows what they are talking about.

Landlord says he is in next bloque. Due to outrageous termination fees Vodafone are threatening with, he has demanded they provide better service, expecting a tech out next few days, they are hoping to provide up to 3 Mg, so i hope so too!!

It's an 8" tablet by Artview Android 4.0! has all the necessary sockets for mini HDMI/mini USB/headphone socket/Memory card/front & back facing camera also video it already had browser installed but in addition I installed Firefox! I bought it in the shop next to Wortens last August! it works really well, is quite fast and is fine for my needs there are no issues with streaming! I also installed Filmon and DT media and TV is really good! the only thing is the battery only lasts about 3-4 hours max! If it last a couple of years I would be happy enough with that!

You probably didn't want all this info! but there you have it!

Suej. If I could jump in here and say that you can never provide too much info in these situations 'cause everyone has differing needs/wants etc. So, in short, I thank you for your info!

If you are not a follower of brands, do not care about mega pixels, and have no idea about d.p.i. , then some of the generic android tablets work perfectly well for watching TV, surfing the web, emails, Skype video, watching movies on the plane and the usual Android app downloads etc - all for half the price of a well know brand tablet or iPad.

My brother has a CNM 9 inch tablet - ok, so the screen resolution/viewing angle isn't the best, nor is the camera, but at just £129 from Argos - it does fine for his needs.

His tablet, just like Suej's , has an HDMI port - so direct connectivity to the home TV for iPlayer / TV catchup etc . The USB port allows a cheap keyboard and/or mouse to be added, the micro SD card slot allows videos/picture/music etc to be easily added, and Bluetooth allows files etc to be exchanged between other Bluetooth equipment - none of that can be done easily or cheaply on an iPad.

For just £129, it is an invaluable little tool.

Mine was around 150€ VW! and to be honest I can't find fault with it! I wasn't sure whether an expensive one was a bit "wasted" on me tbh but it's nice to sit on the sofa and maybe look in on the forum or browse play a game etc...it's perfect! especially if I want to chat for an hour on Skype to my friends and family in UK! :eyebrows: I bought the 3G kindle but in hindsight would have been happy with just the wifi version! in fact I am now wanting the new paper white! there's always something better that comes out to make us part with our dosh!

Aye. HDMI out seems to be a common prob on old Dell laptops, will test another laptop to see if it works.

I bought my wife iPad 3 64Gb last year (no 3G) cost just under 600 quid - she was computer illiterate before - can´t get it off her now to try things out! once set up, easy to use and quick .
I still prefer my lappie though !

Im looking to buy a tablet, but cant decide which one. Theres too much choice. The only things I know that I want is WIfi only, around 10" screen and at least 16GB HD. Ive only ever used Iphones, so don't know anything about Android tablets. Anyone have any ideas?

There is no right or wrong answer to this !!!

It depends how computer literate you are; if you already have an I-Phone, then you'll be probably be most at home with an Ipad as they use the same operating system, if price is an issue then an Android tablet is probably better as they are a lot cheaper than Ipads.

If you do decide on Apple, keep an eye on this SITE (http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/specialdeals); it's a very well kept secret - it's where Apple sell off their refurbished and shop surplus equipment, the stock available changes from day to day and everything comes with a full Apple warranty.

Thanks BobMac, from reviews I've read it seems that Ipads are the best in most departments. But I wasn't sure if the Android app market is any good. Its basically going to be used for watching films, playing games and web browsing. Something that I can take with me on a long flight or trip.

I would have a look at Google Nexus 7. They are a great machine. We all have iPhones in my family but 2 of us have the Nexus. Most of apps have on iPhone I have on that. A lot of the apps are free in Google play.
We paid £159 for a 8gb but the 16gb isn't much more.

I had a look at the 10" version. Its very similar to the Ipad 4, but a little cheaper. I'm just unsure whether to opt for the safety of apple software which I know, or the untried android. Im definitely leaning towards the Nexus 10. Thanks for the info.

No worries. It might be worth googling Nexus 10 v iPad and it gives some very unbiased reviews.
I love my iPhone but my nexus is good, it's fast too.

I recently agonized over a similar decision. I wanted to want an Android device as I just don't like the Apple ethos of "lock it down". But, after much deliberation, I crossed to the dark side and got an iPad4. And I like it. Alot. And I am so NOT a typical Apple buyer. I have an Android HTC Desire phone. Windows laptops, WD LIve TV media player etc. I really wanted to discover that the Android tablets really are better. The closest is probably the Asus Transformer. Summarizing the reviews, it is "almost as good as an iPad". And its more expensive.

Pros: The OS is so bug free that it works perfectly. Games might cost a £1 or two, but again, they work perfectly. National Geographic magazine is so much better than the print copy. Likewise for other magazines. iPlayer, SkyGo, etc all work well.

Cons: Despite the connectors that can allow you to read an SD card, the process is so convoluted that its not worth trying. The connectors allow you to easily import photos. And not much more.

Hints: Never pay full price for anything. Use App Shopper to put a "watch" on anything you want and wait. Almost everything has a 1 day special at 10% of the price sooner or later and you'll save lots.

Do not bother with a 3G device (Android or iPad). Save yourself the cost of an extra SIM and just turn your mobile into a WiFi hotspot. That way you only have one SIM to worry about and you can share data between both devices. This is very easy to do on all Android and iPhones.

Get a good case.

The underlying difference between iPads and Andoids is the OS. Android OS is constantly being patched. Perfection is always just around the corner. Games are cheaper and there are more free Apps, but that's because they undergo less testing, and hence are less stable.

Good post, but just one comment. Some Airtime suppliers do not allow your phone to be used as a hotspot to connect to the internet. EE in the UK for instance now charge extra if you want this facility.

Keep your eye on it though hun! Shame about the 3G as that is brilliant on the normal Kindle!:)

Get round that with the mobile wifi Sim Dongles A1 Computers has them pricy at 90 euros. Amazon about 50-60 pounds

I am getting rid of the Ipad2 ajust cos I hate Itunes..... Samsung 3 10.1 is for me, due to the better connectivity usb>card reader drag and drop plus SSHD memory slot to 64mg. Kindle Fire looks useful though.
