Using Movistar Iphone abroad to check emails

Hi, can anyone help me? I am going to UK and have a Movistar Iphone. Last time I went I received a message upon arrival in UK saying to activate data roaming it was 15 euros a day, so I didint bother.
Can I check emails by connecting to Wifi in UK without incurring extortionate costs from Movistar?
To check emails by wifi would data roaming have to be switched on? Cheers

Yes you can check emails via wifi.
Keep data roaming OFF, at all times.

But check setting carefully, there may be a setting to "Data roam", if no Wifi connection available, make sure this is also unchecked
