Our mum came out on holidays on the 7th november and on the 10th November mum took ill the hotel we were staying in got us an ambulance and she went to the private hospital were they had to give her blood.

she was then transferred to candelaria were she was put into intensive care and had to get plasma blood where she is now in a sleep induced coma.

Me and my sister visit her on a daily basis but we are finding it very difficult as we are staying in los cristianos and also the doctors dont speak good english.

We came out as a family of 4 adults and 3 children and my sisters husband who is in the army has had to take the 3 children back to england.

If anyone could give us any advice it would be very much appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your Mum and I hope she has a speedy recovery,Candelaria is a very good hospital and without sounding cruel , you are in Spain so should not expect the Doctors to speak English.Having said that the vast majority do , but are not permitted to in case of a misunderstanding and potential suing.
I do beleive that there are now a few Translators available , ask at the main entrance .If not perhaps it would pay you to take a translator with you , having made an appointment with the specialist or doctor, to discuss what is happening and what the options are.
At least you are not going to be faced with a large bill as she will be being treated under the reciprocal agreement with the UK.
If you need a Translator then contact my daughter Emma ( contact details in my signature) who does this type of work .
Good luck .

Hi Lorna,
Stuart here just wanted to say that a kind member on this forum has kindly donated their apartment to you and your sister for the next 4 weeks up til the 30th of december i will tell you this much that it is in Los Cristianos and it is a lovely apartment.
The owners are not here at the moment and are more than happy for you and your sister to use it.

The cost to you is only a small amount to cover electric and water and a clean at the end of your stay.
I will give you more details when i meet you at the place your are staying in now Friday morning at 10am where we dropped you off last night and i will take you to the new apartment.

I am sure this will help give you and your sister peace of mind knowing you are now sorted out with a apartment for the next 4 weeks.

Thanks again to this very kind member for your help in the matter.....you are a star.:)

Lorna i will give you this members personal details so you can thank them through a email when i meet you.:)

Have to say YG, if you're looking for some kind of knighthood/Saintship you've got to be in the running when Her Madge writes up the New Years list!!!!

Top fella!

Lorna, I think you're in safe hands here! I hope your Mum is ok, she's certainly in the best place. Candelaria is a very very good hospital, my Mum was there a short while ago and her treatment was first class. The food's a bit weird but the care is fabulous!

The very best wishes to your Mum. :)

Young Golfer - I don't know you personally but you really shout be praised so highly for the kindness in your heart, you really are a true gentleman and your kindness has no bounds. Maybe we should tell the consulate about everything that YG is doing and see if they can commend him in some way. I really do believe you deserve recognition for what you are doing.

Just a thought Lorna....do you or your mom have travel insurance?

I believe the answer is No, in this case, just as it was in David & Lynn's case ... so the strongest point that must come out of recent threads (apart from our empathy & help) is the utter necessity of Travel Insurance

Ok just met the girls showed them the apartment that they can stay in for a few weeks there is not cost to them as someone has kindly offered to pay for electric and water and clean at the end of their stay.So at least they now have a base and peace of mind. they are both up so Santa Cruz now.
Bit of good luck they are in contact with a taxi driver in Santa Cruz who meets them at the hospital to help them with the translation again free of charge. There are some nice people around.
The girls will update everyone with their mums progress later today/tonight.

It is so heartwarming in these days of doom, gloom and violence to see that there are still kindhearted and generous people in the World. These "Good News" stories should be highlighted more. So sorry to hear about your Mum but as everyone says -----She is in safe and very professional hands in Candelaria.

Hi Lorna,

I have read this thread and so so feel for you. I live here and went through a similar thing with my father being sent to Candelaria hospital and it was difficult for us, so my heart goes out to you being here on holiday and it all feeling so weird and strange all being in a different country and a different language.

I dont know what I can do, but if there is anything I can I would like to help. If you came out here on holiday are you ok for warm clothes?? Although I have read through this thread I am not sure where you are staying, are you in the north or south? You dont need to answer any of this on public forum, but if you want a homemade dinner one evening, or a couple of fleeces to keep you warm, or a lift upto the hospital please contact me via PM if you want and let me know.

Take care and thinking of you

Big hug

Was up at the hospital today mum was very confused and disorientated saying things that we didnt understand. doctors say that she is better today than yesterday her platelets are up to 17,000 compared to 8,000 yesterday. we think it is the new treatment they have started her on.

The doctors reckon she will be confused and disorientated because of how serious her illness is and the amount of medication she has had.

Just hope we have hit a turning point and are going to get good news now

Remember that Mum is not only ill in strange surroundings (hospital) but also, when none of you are there she is surrounded my people all talking "funny" and non-understandable. Can you get her a wee radio and tune into one of the English speaking channels, if possible. There may be English speaking channels in Peurto which can be picked up when the hospital is so far up the hill towards La Laguna. Alternatively D/l the previous days radio onto a suitable player, iPod sort of thingy!
We all continue to wish you well and for a speedy recovery for your Mum.

Was up at the hospital today and was speaking to mumīs consultant. With this new drug they are giving her, her platelets are going up but they still need to get them away up.

Mumīs memory was lost today to the extinct that she knew no-one around her and just wanted to sleep so we only popped our head in as she needs her sleep.

The docotrs are hoping that when mumīs platelets go up to 300,000 and they reduce the medication that she dosenīt have a relapse or we are back to the sstart again. They are 45,000 at the minute. The doctorīs are also hoping that she gets her memory back but we just have to wait and see

Was up at the hospital today never got to speak to a doctor today so we dont know what the platelets are, the urine infection has gone but there is now a little bit of bacteria in her catheter so they are carrying on with the antibiotics.

Had a brilliant day with mum she didnt want to sleep memory still a bit blank but at least things are coming back. She was talking to the grandkids today on the phone which lifted her spirits.

We took up a head scarf and i said to her do you wanna see yourself so i took a photo on my phone and showed her it and she said sure im gorgeous. Shes must be feeling alot better in herself as she said to us the best thing now would be a doctor to walk in and tell her she can go home. was up at the hospital today got the best news we could have been hoping for. Mum has all her antibiotics out and when we went into her she said i am going home on thursday we thought she was just saying it because of the memory.

Spoke to mums consultant and he said he was happy enough for mum to be discharged on Thursday as long as she has a hospital to go to. platelets dropped to 179.000 so they are going to continue to give mum the treatment til thursday morning.

Have to wait til thursday to speak to her consultant back home to see what he says but fingers crossed.

Mum is feeling really good and looks alot better

Well very pleased to say they are now back home safe and sound.....i am very sure they will post themselves when they have time....but in the meantime want to say thanks to CIM for taking me and one of the sisters at late notice to the airport today...... a very busy guy but took the time out to help.:)
Also to Shakespears bar for taking these girls under their wing.:)

Also to other members on here who also helped out....one member who gave a free apartment.... another will pay for any bills electric ect and a clean....another who gave clothes the list goes on thankyou.

But i have to say over the last few weeks i have become friends with a guy who in both cases has given a lot of his time to help out.. and thats Gordon cheers for everything you have done...like i said before he is a forum member but i cant tell you who he is.:nono::)

P.S he is Santas little helper(a private joke ELF) good guy BIG heart.

I must say helping this family made me feel really good as they were so grateful to everyone on here the forum and i thinked that showed in their regular updates.
A very Merry Chrismas to this family :santa:

Having read through the whole of this thread - I would just like to say firstly- it is fabulous news that the lady is ok, and has returned home. Secondly - wow!! You guys are all absolutely amazing for everything that you have done for this family, totally out of the goodness of your hearts. It is so heartwarming in this day and age to see how so many people have pulled together to help, with time, financially, support......it really is mindblowing!! I travel out tomorrow for 10 days with my family. Heaven forbid should I need any assistance during my stay, but I do know where I can go if I do!! You are all fabulous xx

just to let you all know mum is doing really well she was up for her check up and the doctor was very please with her everything is up. MY mum held a chartity night for the hospital and rasied Ģ620.00 for them which was good she wanted to do something good for them me and the girls went over to help her. The only thing that is annoying her is that she has lost apart of her memory which the wee bit of her brain has gone but the doctor says thats ok since what she has been threw and they said they will keep an eye on it. Thanks very much still for reading this and i will keep u up dated again take care everyone.

Hi TOTO I do go out of my way to find out how people we have helped in the pass and how they are doing but in this case the couple themselves never contacted me but someone from a third party did a while back.
And the last I was told she was ok....... which at the end of the day thats what really matters she got back home safe.
