I wanted to try a new recipe from Saturday Kitchen but it says to use spring onions. Couldn't see any in Mercadona. Are they readily available? If not, do you have any ideas as to what I could use instead?

If you see a wee French chappie (oka as a Froggie) on a bicycle with string hanging from his handlebars, he,ll probably have some.

I bought some this week from the fruit and veg shop in Los Cris, just past the petrol stations, opposite the taxi rank, just before the square.

They have them in the Farmers market in Adeje every weekend, It is open Sat and Sun, I have also seen them in Makro and Hiperdino. But if no luck then try using the small shallots. There is also the market in San Isidro and Las Chafiras.

Thank you so much, Louise and Greg.
Thought they must be available since they ALWAYS have them at the Chinese restaurant!!
Tried the recipe without the spring onions and it was okay but needed that little bit of oomph!!

Small white onions are quite mild and sweet, the only thing missing would be the green stem, for that you can use young leeks.:)

Thanks again. Mr. Polremy suggested leeks but I wasn't sure.
Will look for small white onions too.

the shame is when you do get them, they are HUGE.... if worse comes to worse, you can get them already chopped up frozen from Mercadona :)

Thanks, Chif.
The irony is I've just got back from Mercadona!!!!
Didn't think of looking in the freezer.
Will return.

you're welcome.... but not always got them in, you know what Mercadona is like, you find something you like, then they stop stocking it :jumping:
