Try waiting a few more months and see if the price comes down?

Thanks for the advice beerfan , I may well do that . On the other hand I could fly to Portugal or Spain for less than half price , that is the point .

That works out about 21p a mile, which is not bad when you think that the average price in a UK taxi is between £1-£1.50 per mile!

Some parts of Spain (like Malaga) will cost less to fly to than other parts (Tenerife, say, or Lanzarote) and sometimes it is less - the same applies with Portugal's Faro and Madeira for instance, although Madeira is almost always more expensive than Faro. Have you also thought about some of the other Canary Islands?

Do you use Skyscanner? It's worthwhile shopping around different local airports too if you have a few within travelling distance of where you live. Sometimes the prices can be very different.

It depends what sort of weather you want as well - I find that many of these southern European tourist resorts are fairly anonymous so spreading your search a bit further may help also. Turkey or the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" can be fairly cheap, for example, if you're willing to go that far. There's more to holidays than just Tenerife.

Has it ever occurred to you that June/ Euro football may be popular?

I have just done 3 weeks, with luggage for less than £250 for 2.

I fly out next week from Liverpool and my flight was £24.99. £50 in total with luggage and add ons!
Where would you fly from? It's a bit early to book flights for June 2012. I would leave it till Jan/Feb.

Oh yes, you can be sure that a "steel bar" is available to fight your way through the crowds.;)

Flights to Tenerife are no longer expensive, Monarch have got loads of seats out of Manchester £45 and in you use code flyuk you save an extra £6 each way.

Malaga and Portugal are cheaper for various reasons fuel being the first and secondly time, An aircraft flying to Malaga can do 2 return trips in a day to the Canaries they can only do 1. Also Ryanair crew now do 2 return trips in 1 flying day this would also be impossible for Tenerife.

I have just looked at Ryanair from Stanstead going out 14/6/12 coming back 2 weeks later on 28th is showing £125.37 total. Does not include baggage and that was without really trying. I might hate Ryanair...........but love their prices

The baggage on Ryanair is a gouge. £40 for a single 15kg bag (or £60 for a 20kg bag)!

Yes, BUT Ryanair allow 10kgs hand luggage meaning you can holiday without hold luggage and not have to queue to check-in.

You would be hard pushed to holiday on Thomsonfly's 5kgs hand luggage - you would thus have to 'buy' hold luggage allowance.

I'm sure I vaguely remember seeing something like this but didn't clock its full meaning. Thanks for letting me know.

There are 3 of us flying back to Tenerife next Tuesday - £19.99 each, no taxes.

Even with the admin fee, web check in fee and card fee it was still only £101.97 in total for 3 of us.

Can't really complain about that!

Be careful though as Ryanair's case size is smaller than other airlines for carry on luggage -

55cm x 40cm x 20cm compared to 56cm x 45cm x 25cm

Most supermarket cheap suitcases are undersized by 10 - 20% volume.

Take an oversized backpack instead and utilise ALL your hand luggage allowance. Simply squash it to fit by using a bungee.

The backpack is normally lighter than a small suitcase, on the back it allows both hands free allowing you to get out of the airport quicker and safer, and can be used as a beach or shopping bag too. No noisy wobbly wheels to alert undesirables when walking to the bus at 4am.

We use Sub Zero G cabin sized cases. They weigh @1.74 kilos and cost around £30. They can be purchased from Argos and Matalan along with other places. All our family who use our apartment use the same cases

Out of purely idle curiosity - how can they not charge taxes? Or do they pay the tax out of the fare you pay? Surely everyone would be at it otherwise .. oh, don't bother paying the VAT in Marks and Spencers, etc.

I think you'll find that the Canarian Government is paying the taxes, Mr O'leary is too smart to be paying them himself

In general, £180 for a return flight is sort of within average. I'm out next month by Monarch out of Luton (scheduled) for £150 and in March we both come out with Easyjet out of Gatwick for £393

I used to pay about £200 return from Norwich and think nothing of it but don't do it now but loads of people do for the convenience

This is one of the main problems when it comes to flight prices now, peoples perception of what is value for money. In most other industries inflation has meant prices have risen over the past 10 years, yet people expect flights to be cheaper! Operating aircraft an average of 1900 miles in each direction isn't cheap and £180 to travel 3800 miles return, roughly 21p per mile, I'd say is good value for money.

You say the airlines are greedy, have a think about how much it actually costs to operate these flights. A typical Boeing 737 costs to lease, crew, insure and maintain it roughly £2,000 per hour it is flying, you have fuel to go ontop of that, roughly 20,000kg of it to do a Tenerife return from the UK, at todays prices that is roughly £13,000 of fuel.

We are now already on £29,000 so that split between say 189 seats gives us £154 per seat as a basic cost so far. There are then airport costs, handling agent costs for check-in and baggage, air traffic control costs, plus the UK Government APD. Now that's the direct flight costs but then you have all the non operational staff from call handlers through to the Directors that need paying too, business premesis need paying for as well as all the office equipment and other costs associated with a business.

Add it all together and you soon see that £180 is actually a reasonable price, £50 flights to the Canaries are loss makers and are not sustainable in the long term with the increasing price of fuel and everything else.

I was speaking to somebody in the commerial department for a Spanish airline the other month, she said that they won't even contemplate new services to the UK at the moment and are concentrating on the likes of Scandinavia as the UK market expect fares that are simply too low to make viable.

Out of purely idle curiosity - how can they not charge taxes? Or do they pay the tax out of the fare you pay? Surely everyone would be at it otherwise .. oh, don't bother paying the VAT in Marks and Spencers, etc.

Ryanair still have to pay the UK Government APD, which is currenly £12 per passenger and rising further next year, the Canaries may have dropped flight tax for the moment but other countries haven't and they still advertise no taxes on those flights too. It is simply a marketing gimmick, Ryanair are still paying the tax, it's just coming out of the fare price.

One of the reason the aircraft industrie is doing so well at present is because of the price of fuel orders for the new A320 sharklet type with new engines are booming rates of 9-10 a week we have just done the first 2 and the same for new 737 just won a huge order for these more fuel efficent aircraft maybe help to keep prices down.
The £50 return prices as has been said are unastainable if every ryan air seat was that price they would not last long (are they actualy selling flights or is it the add ons!) i have been paying £180 -£200 over the last few years and for the distance i think thats reasonable but for next year you cant help notice for when i want to fly they are nearer £250 on Ryan Air for many they cant choose when they go its got to be school holidays or in my case i have to choose my weeks a year in advance so im usually locked in to those weeks and just have to pay the going rate hence this year and next i flying with jet2 a bit cheaper not much and as Ryan Air have cut the winter Saturday flight . David
