Exactly which football law does this break to be an automatic red card offence ??

Ungentelmenly conduct. The ref had to give the goal as that was the play of the match. Afterwards he sent the player off for not playing fair at the drop ball(which was probably agreed that the ball would be kicked to the opposition). Well done to the ref in my opinion!

Just checked the rules according to the F.A and it makes no mention of being RED carded for "ungentlemanly conduct" it does mention seven specific reasons for a red card but not that,so i don't think you CAN be sent off for that offence ??
It certainly wasn't sporting, and the ref should always state the the ball SHOULD be kicked back to the opposition and if it wasn't a yellow card should be given?
Very much an unclear rule with regard to the "drop ball"
I agree the ref needed to take action but it doesn't appear he (the player) broke any rules?

The ref should have had a word with the player and his manager and told them to let the opposition score from the kick-off. That would have been fair play. I thought all players would know its not in the rules but you don't do it, but maybe this the next step after the budding Olympic divers we see in and around the penalty box every week. Its about time the FIFA started fining players when the ref misses it and its shown on TV highlights.

Just been out for lunch with a friend who used to be a qualified referee and he says that there is nothing in the rules to stop a player from doing what this player did, it's purely a gentlemen's agreement and ungentlemanly conduct is only a yellow card offence anyway. He reckons that the player is perfectly within the rules to do exactly what he did and the referee would actually have been out order booking him as he didn't actually break any football rule doing what he did.
