Hi I'm wanting to move both me and my young son to Tenerife in 18 months to 2 years time so trying to gather as much advice as I can on doing so. It's for a better life for him in the long run to be honest,I'm starting Spanish classes and also taking up a tefl course to enable me to do teaching there. I'm a qulified teaching assistant and complex care assistant but think the teaching is my best bet at being able to provide for us. As I said any hints and tips and advice people can give me would be wonderful thanks in advance

Because of the time factor being up to two years my personal opinion is to just read, day after day, threads historically written and the best way to do that is just think of a question and do a search. That way you are gonna be asking the same questions others have raised previously. Obviously, given time, you may run out of answers but have still questions to ask. No problem then. Just fire away after doing a lot of reading!
Meantime continue to join in with the Forum in its day to day life. Others may disagree but I thought about your posting as if I had written it but also as the person answering!

I seem to remember from the old Tenerife Forum days that KirstyJay wrote an article on how becoming a teacher/classroom assistant in the Canaries works.

From what I remember it was extremely complicated, took a long time and a lot of perseverance, unfortunately I have done a google search and cannot find the article but it may be somewhere in the database that has been recovered by this new forum. Alternatively perhaps you can ask for the information again.:ashamed:.

Unfortunately, I believe those teaching posts (which were very hard to come by) are now a thing of the past (cutbacks).

Leanne (welcome to the Forum :)) , teaching English has very limited scope in Tenerife, particularly in the South - at best you might pick up a few hours a week, but there are already very many ahead of you with better contacts, I am afraid :)

I would agree with Doreen. Yes I believe these posts have been abandoned. Moreover, even if they did still exist I seem to remember that you could be posted to any of the islands, chances of being at a school anywhere nearby were slim to non existent, sadly.

Also teaching privately is competitive and the number of students few and far between.

Don't not learn Spanish, but if you can pick up a few other skills outside teaching, childcare etc., go for it, they will probably serve you better and good luck.

I posted this in answer to a similar post the other day - please remember....

Unemployment rate in UK - circa 9%
Unemployment rate in Canaries - circa 23%

Hello all and thank you for your replies. I'm not doing this for a life of sun,sea and play haha, as I said it's all for my sons wellbeing him getting ill due to cold n damp ere in blighty is heartbreaking to me. I understand that there is alot of people outta work over there but I'm willing to push passed that an hence all my research in such advance. I wanna do it for the long haul not a short few months. So I'll be seaching as suggested and then asking lots of questions as they crop up in my noggin lol. Looking forward to getting to know more n more bout a life worth fighting for :) xx

Leanne I am sure that by doing your research early you will arrive here with your eyes wide open and won´t have any nasty surprises. Between now and when you are planning on coming hopefully there will be an upturn in the employment market. I wish you the very best of luck for both you and your son. I am sure you will make the right decision for both of you in the end.

Thank you very much zara, best place to get the answers are from the source ie people who have done the relocation before. Glad I can pick peoples brains for choices.
Is it possible to make contacts on the forum before I go out there or only in person? Prob a daft question but worth asking :)

I'm sure that's more than possible if you spend enough time here communicating and socialising generally. You'll make friends here that perhaps one day you can meet for real out in Tenerife itself. :)

That's good to know thank you beerfan. Just to compile my questions I can't find answers to and get to grips with the forum. Looking foreward to making friends (not just contacts).
THANK YOU ALL :) xx

Despite what many people say, you will need to learn the language. There are people who have lived here for years who never learn, but life will be much easier if you do.

Visits to the doctor, talking to your son's teachers and expanding your circle of friends will all be greatly enhanced, and your potential as a possible employee will not be done any harm by your ability to speak the local lingo.

Good luck

Indeed - this is very basic advice really but it is always relevant. Try to integrate as much as you can with your new country too. Again, it will make life easier. :)

23 years and still going as a resident of Tenerife and I would wholeheartedly agree that integration will be essential for future incomers and without doubt get your Spanish sorted. Doctors can be a drag!!!!!!!!!!
