I have also got unlocking cards for iphone 4, will work on any firmware upto 4.3.5. 20 Euro each

These cards will allow you to unlock your iphone 4 to any network. It simply 'piggy backs' your sim in the sim tray to unlock your phone.

What happens when the phone is updated to version 5? Is it locked again?

The gevey unlocking cards are not compatible with ios 5 due to the upgraded baseband which is part of the new ios.
That is why I said they are only compatible upto 4.3.5 (baseband 4.10.06).

So my original question was, if somebody were to buy it with the version 4.3.5 on their phone, when they connect to their PC and if they have auto update set as "ON" will their phone then stop working altogether ?

Admittedly, they should have backed it up first and could revert back ( if done properly).

Hi TIS,

If the iphone is updated then the unlock will stop working. You cannot downgrade the baseband for the phone even if you manage to downgrade the ios (which is impossbile unless the iphone was jailbroken and had its shsh blobs save for an older firmware).

If you use a Gevey then you simply do not update your ios or if you do, then use a custom firmware without baseband upgrade. It is the baseband that gets unlocked and not the firmware. All firmwares come with a baseband (modem firmware). The gevey only works on basebands from 1.59 (ios 4.0) - 4.10.06(ios 4.35).

Hope this clears up the question :spin:

what does jailbroken mean and are the blackberries unlocked and come with headphones

@skin

Jailbroken means that the iphones firmware has been modified to allow 3rd party apps to run it, these apps are usually free and their are about 1 million of these apps. It makes the iphone a whole lot better :)

The blackberries are unlocked but do not come with headphones. They take standard walkman type headphones as used by any personal mp3 players.
