I do feel how ever some places who change money for holiday makers here tend to hold back on giving a fair rate to the customer.............some are in fact a joke god knows why................... cant see anyone with any sense wanting to change money with them.

I spoke to a exchange company the other day who said it was quite.....mind you their rate was in the pass very good but now it's poor.

Thing is you will find loads of holiday makers walk that bit more for a Euro or two better.

The part that most people don't realize is there is no exchange rate between Eurozone countries. A Euro is a Euro.

A lot of people are confused as to why exchange rates don't affect others..(Just a point)

i wouldnt think you would get a massively better rate in tenerife, and probably anything over 1.20 is going to be good. We got 1.25 in the UK in July, and have been quoted 1.20 in San Blas recently, my son arrived yesterday and got 1.19 in UK. Maybe a good idea to exchange half in uk now if you can still get 1.22 and the rst when you get here?

Hi
I changed my money at the coop money shop.
They do happy hour on a thurs in town, about lunch time(dont think it made a whole lot of difference)
I got 1.22 on a money passport, that gives you a pin number and stuff, there is a small charge for using the cash piont, cost the same for a large or small amount, bear that in mind when you need cash.
I got 1.23.8 for cash euros to take with me. the rate was better prior to that.
the lady in the shop advised to buy then, because the rate was falling, and sure enough it seems to have slipped a little.
Hope this helps a little.

Make sure you have a wonderful time.

This is not always the case, CaxtonFx offered the same rate yesterday, plus occasionally they offer special deals for a 24 hour period.

CaxtonFx allows you to keep track of the euro exchange rate and load your debit card from your home, plus you have the security of not having to carry large sums of money, withdrawal of your money can be made in Tenerife from ATMs at no charge, or spent using your debit card.

CaxtonFx todays rate is €1.2220 to the Pound.

Below is their daily report:-

STERLING/EURO: The euro is struggling this morning as Spanish unemployment data disappoints once again.

•Spanish data has revealed that October saw a further 130k people out of work, the worst showing in nine months. Greece also has the market nervous about the euro, as PM Samaras presents more austerity measures to parliament in a bid to get the next aid tranche released.
•Data from the UK was far stronger on Friday, with the UK construction sector unexpectedly bouncing back into positive growth territory. Expectations are for a pretty firm UK services figure this morning, which should see sterling well-supported above €1.25 today as long as we don’t see a major disappointment.

They tend to change on a daily/weekly basis.
When we were there last week the rates were 1.22
We tend to take enough to carry us through for a day or so and take £'s with us and change them in Tenerife.

The question now is when will the Government devalue the £?

With the Quantitative easing and the loss of the triple AAA rating the £ is being hammered from all sides and I think our numbskulls in government will devalue.
They will then tell us that it is 'the right thing to do' because it will help our exports.......................... what about our imports?

Hi Chris,

No never, with the Caxton card, the amount you enter on the local bank ATM in Tenerife is in euros is what you get with no charges.

I don't know if there are non bank ATM's like we have in the UK shopping malls or pubs etc. where charges are made, but if you stick with the bank ATM's you will never incur a charge.

Hi
I am coming over for 5 weeks in the summer and will be planning on bringing £3000. Unsure whether to change up into euros before I come or when I'm there as don't know where I will get the best exchange rate. Been told by my bank that I will be charged 2% on every transaction which makes me not want to leave the money in my bank and spend on debit cards and withdraw cash. Is it worth doing travellers cheques? I am not staying in a hotel so would need to change them elsewhere, anyone know the charges to pay on them. Really unsure the best way to bring money over as didn't really want to have to carry around £3000! Any suggestions welcome!

We have always found the exchange kiosks give the best rate if you havent got a bank account to transfer to over in Tenerife. £3000 is a lot to carry around in your pocket though, hope you have a good safe!

I have a visa debit card through Nationwide, after the charges the rate is usually the same as the best rate on the street for that day. Some atm's charge more than others, I withdraw at the Caja Canaries atm.

2% is not alot really, considering that the margin between the interbank rate and the best buy sell rates you find on the street are normally more like 5%. Alot of banks charge 2% or £2, so make sure you never get out small amounts, always 150€ at a time minimum. You will never go far wrong with this plan and you never have to carry around large amounts of cash.

Travelers cheques will cost you at least 1% plus are alot more hassle to use.

Keep it all in context too. If dinner is 40€ or 40.80€ it hardly makes a difference, does it?

At the moment the Pound has only lost a small amount against the Euro and American Dollar, but if the "Yes" vote wins, who knows. One of the big institutions "Standard Life" have already declared that they will be moving South...not good for Scotland or the rest of the UK as it exists today. :-(

Sorry Ecky, I thought you were getting rid of yer Euro....no?
Yer Euro is stable. It's Sterling that is the problem, and a bit of this instability is about Scotland, but a larger bit is about the vote on EU membership. This part of their (the British Govt) problem will remain long after the Independence vote and not go away 'till after the EU vote for Brittains exit from Eu is decided and carried out.;)

Agreed, but Caxton FX report today pointed out that the worlds banks are waiting for the referendum results and at the moment it's uncertainty is affecting the world financial market towards the pound, albeit it's only having a very small effect. Certainly not enough to have a effect on my holiday spending!

I'm now getting my affects and effects confused, a sign of tiredness or forgetfulness??

kingbaker
10-09-2014, 22:43
My opinion on Independence is the following.
1. Scotland like Ireland, needs to be in the Eu. It's a market of 400m people to which you already have full and free access, without tarriffs or import duties etc. This is guaranteed by the treaty of Rome which is still in force. This could change if Brittain leaves the EU.

2. Scotland needs to be in the Euro. It also needs the European Central Bank (as this comes with membership of the Eurozone) for stability as Sterling will be up and down untill they sort the EU membership properly....no sign of them having any ideas on how to do this.

3. At the moment, the only to achieve 1 and 2 above is to vote Yes.

Some areas will benefit immediately from this and others will take a while, but at least a decisions would be taken by Scots.;)

;);)

kingbaker
10-09-2014, 22:56
As regards currency Englanders, in my experience have never accepted Scottish or Northern Irish Sterling notes.
If a yes vote prevails, the separation would take at least a year or two....nothing drastic should happen.

If I were a Scot, with a few quid, I would change all my available cash into a Euro account in a Eurozone country. Safety would be the priority......not earning interest. I'd then review this decision every quarter or so

So you can blame it all on us Scottish folk for not having enough to spend while your in Tenerife, but it looks as if more of us are seeing the light!

Today's Report from Caxton Fx

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2709
Sterling received a boost early in today's morning session, as soon as the results of the Scottish referendum were released. With the outcome being a 'No', it is unsurprising that we saw both significant price action and added volatility across sterling markets. The markets had expected a very close vote, based on polls leading up to the ballot, but with the levels of price action we saw in the build up to the announcement, it became fairly clear that there was only going to be one outcome. Despite the lack of any economic data out of the UK today, we expect to continue seeing activity as last week's activity continues pricing into the market.
Overall, we expect the GBP/EUR rate to continue following the current trend pattern, especially now that the uncertainty surrounding sterling will slowly start exiting the market. We are yet to see the full impact of the most recent ECB rates cut, with speculation about the Scottish referendum having dominated most activity of the past few weeks. Today sees the release of consumer confidence figures out of the eurozone. With market participants still waiting to see the impact that the most recent interest rate cut will have on economic recovery in the eurozone, we fully expect the figure to drop off further on the previous month, as is currently being forecasted.

Today's rate for loading a Caxton debit card remains at €1.241 to the GB Pound

Today's Report From CaxtonFX.

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2688

Caxtonfx Rate for loading your debit card.......€1.24 to the Pound.

Despite the ECB having introduced additional measures to avert deflation in the eurozone area, best on consumer prices improving have started falling. Data last week revealed that even after a surprise rates cut, inflation fell to an almost four year low. It is therefore unlikely that we Monday's consumer confidence survey dropped off on last month's figure. It appears as though investors are speculating that ECB President Draghi is running out of options to revive the stalled recovery as confidence continues diminishing and governments embark on structural reforms.
Overall we expect the GBP/EUR rate to continue on an upward trajectory, especially after Draghi highlighted that both economies were on a divergent path. In our opinion, we are still yet to see the recent string of weak eurozone economic data price into the GBP/EUR rate, with speculation surrounding the outcome of the Scottish referendum having dominated any price action we have seen over the past few weeks.

Today's Money Report From CaxtonFX.

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2798

Data out of the eurozone revealed that money supply in the eurozone region is rising faster than predicted. The ECB started its TLTRO program last week, aimed to lend cheap funds to banks. During the first offering, eurozone financial institutions borrowed €82.6bn, slightly short of the level that the market was expecting. Despite this, it appears as though there are improving signs of credit growth, and this should offer some comfort to policymakers. Today sees the release of German factory orders figures out of the eurozone. With German data contributing to the euro downside currently, we expect to see more price action on the back of the release.
With very little sterling support in the form of economic data last week, we expect to see more price action this week. Added volatility is providing trading opportunities for market participants, and it is likely that this will continue as long as global economic recovery remains on track. Data on Friday revealed that retail and wholesale sales rose at a slower pace in August than the previous month. With consumer spending being a good indication of the confidence in an economy, we expect growth in the UK to continue going from strength to strength.

Todays Money Report from CaxtonFX GBP/EUR

Currently trading at 1.2834

The GBP/EUR rate remained volatile on Monday, as a strong of inflation figures out of Germany weighed in on the currency pairing. German CPI remained unchanged on both a monthly and annualized basis, despite the fact that the market had forecasted the figure to drop off. ECB President Draghi has reiterated that the exchange rate isn't a policy target, and therefore expect any significant change in the currency's value to have little impact on the central bank's decision making. Today sees the release of inflation data out of the region as a whole, With the figures expected to drop off slightly on an annualized basis, we should see further price action.
Overall we expect the GBP/EUR rate to continue moving on a downward trajectory today, as uncertainty continues hindering any euro strength. The third Q2 GDP estimate should offer some firm support for the sterling upside, with the figure having shown signs of consistency since the start of the year. The UK current account deficit is also expected to narrow further, suggesting that exports have improved following a below par performance for months. With the outlook for sterling remaining positive, despite UK economic data showing signs of inconsistency, we expect the currency to continue posting gains.

Today's Money Report From CaxtonFX GPP/EUR

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2840

The GBP/EUR rate consolidated its gains above the 1.28 mark, as a further drop in inflation levels weighed in on the euro. This has created speculation that the ECB will go ahead with boosting monetary stimulus in order to avert deflation. Some market participants have the view that a weak currency will suit Draghi as it makes eurozone exports more competitive, while increasing consumer prices by making imports more expensive, but it remains to be seen whether this is the case. With ECB President Draghi expected to speak later in the week, we expect market participants to keep a close eye on any further signs of easing from the central bank.
Today sees the release of PMI data out of both the eurozone and the UK. UK PMI manufacturing figures dropped off slightly in September, as the sector continued showing signs of weakness. The manufacturing sector contributes a sizeable amount to the UK's total output and we have therefore been accustomed to seeing significant price action on the back of the release. Data on Tuesday revealed that there was an upward revision in Q2 growth and business investment. The current level of GDP in the UK is higher than its pre-recession level, suggesting that UK economic recovery is exceeding expectations.

Today's CaxtonFX Money Report.

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2811

The GBP/EUR rate continued moving on upward trend on Wednesday, despite the release of some weak manufacturing data out of the UK. UK PMI manufacturing figures grew at the slowest pace in 17 months in September, as growth in new orders dropped to a new two and a half year low. The weakening of manufacturing figures in August was cited as a major concern among BoE policymakers, during last month's monetary policy meeting, and we therefore expect the latest release to raise a few questions. With the release of more PMI data today, from the construction sector, we expect to see more price action across sterling markets.
Today will be crucial from a euro perspective, with the all-important ECB press conference following today's rate decision. Speculation surrounding the ECB introducing additional measures to help avert deflation, has seen the euro dip significantly over the past month. With inflation having dipped by a further 10 basis points to 0.3% in September, we expect some form of action to be taken. ECB President Draghi has already stated that the central bank could beef up the scale of its asset purchase program if economic recovery in the region required additional support, and it will therefore be interesting to see what comes out of today's speech.

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2729

Pessimism surrounded sterling on Thursday, following the release of poor manufacturing PMI figures earlier in the week. However, surpassing expectations, construction PMI registered a reading of 64.2, 0.2 higher than forecasted; indicating that the sector is expanding. This news was overshadowed by the impending ECB press conference and with heavy volatility in the market, the GBP/EUR rate dropped off slightly.
The decrease in GBP/EUR rate was unaffected by Draghi's dovish behaviour, as the ECB President was unable to provide details on how ECB intended QE to work, but made it clear that the central bank would continue easing policy in order to support economic recovery. The ECB announced in their press conference that they are planning on buying covered bonds in order to flood cash into Eurozone economy. Unless further detail can be provided volatility can be expected to ensue in the pairing.

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2734

Friday saw Sterling continue to fall as poor data came out of the UK. Spanish, Italian and UK services PMI data all registered at less than forecasted, causing volatility in the pairing.
Little news out of the UK and Eurozone today but with UK manufacturing data tomorrow and Draghi's speech on Thursday we should see some volatility as the week progresses.

The pound has continued to slide against most of its major counter parts after UK Services PMI on Friday morning failed to impress. High hopes of a GBP comeback were dashed on the rocks of disappointment after the most important PMI figure showed that the rate of expansion in the UK Services sector slowed. This was magnified against the US dollar who received some unexpected strength from encouraging Non-Farm employment change, trade balance and unemployment figures – all performing far above expectations and signalling hopes that the US economy is on the right track. Today brings a quieter day on the calendar front which will, in all likelihood, result in the pound losing further ground until tomorrow’s session.

New UK car sales data was registered at a 10-year high yesterday. Just under 2 million cars have been sold this year with 425,861 sales in September alone. After poor data released last week, this is a positive sign for the pound.
German factory orders fell 5.7% compared with the previous month, far below forecasted and the biggest drop since the financial crisis. This was the fastest fall since 2009 and another setback for Germany. Further data out of Germany this morning showed that industrial production in September, compared with the previous month, was down even less than predicted. With no big news out of the Eurozone today and UK manufacturing production data forecasted to decrease, we can expect the GBP/EUR pairing to continue on a shallow downward trajectory.

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2693

Germany, the once powerful engine for the Eurozone's economy, is finally showing signs of rust. Even more poor data showed that German industrial production has seen the biggest drop since 2009. Germany's economic ministry advised that school holidays and bad timing were to blame but this won't be enough to dismiss the pessimism surrounding Germany and the rest of the Eurozone. It isn't all bad news for the Eurozone as Greece provided a glimmer of hope, unveiling an optimistic budget for 2015 and forecasting an economic expansion by 2.9% next year.
In the UK, manufacturing production figures came out as lower than predicted compared to the previous month but compared to last year manufacturing is up 3.9%. The Office for National Statistics claimed that this was in part due to a longer than usual seasonal maintenance period for car makers. Yesterday saw a lot of volatility in the market and with no big news out today, this can be expected to continue.

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2682

A very quiet day yesterday saw the pairing trading around the 1.270 mark. In an attempt to salvage the German economy, Merkel's government has discussed a €6 billion cut in mandatory pension contribution. Despite their efforts, further poor data continues to emerge from Germany as their trade balance was registered below forecast. Fears that Germany will fall into a recession continue to increase.
In the UK, the Halifax house price index registered better than forecast, which is a good sign after mortgage figures came out lower than expected. Looking ahead, a rate statement from the BoE will provide an indication of where the economy is heading and a hawkish Carney could push the GBP/EUR rate higher. Sadly it is unlikely that a statement will be released so we will most likely look to ECB President Draghi’s speech at 16:00 for further clues on where this pairing will move from here.

Euro-area news yesterday was dominated by Draghi’s speech in Washington DC and surprising volatility followed this. Whilst Draghi’s attitude was hawkish, giving firm assurances that the ECB is willing to enact monetary stimulus if needed and furthermore, aggressive measures have not been ruled out either, he has not said anything that wasn’t announced last week. Draghi did say “the first hike in interest rates is foreseen by 2017,” which is perhaps a longer wait than originally anticipated. However, his attitude is generally promising and following volatility, began a downward trend in the pairing that is still continuing.
Later today the UK trade balance will be announced but this is not expected to impact the market. The IMF and G20 meetings, which produce comments and statements about the current global economic market, should be watched carefully and as they approach volatility can be expected.

This pairing remained range-bound over the weekend after ECB President Draghi's speech on Saturday reiterated that he would take measures to bring inflation closer to 2% but failed to mention what measures would be used.

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2607

Sterling dropped against its European counterpart this morning upon the shocking release of UK inflation data. Most analysts predicted a level or small drop in the rate of inflation however a 0.3% fall was certainly not expected.
The rate then shot straight back up to pre-inflation levels upon the release of the German ZEW Economic Sentiment survey which showed an extremely worrying figure for the Eurozone’s powerhouse and increased fears

Yesterday’s almost silent calendar caused market movement to rule the day, with most currencies moving in line with expectations. We saw the pound drop off against its counterparts most likely due to political concerns as UKIP gains some ground in the opinion polls, although this will no doubt blow over once the by-election hype has died down. This morning’s UK CPI inflation figures were the highlight for the market. After much speculation, sad news has brought the inflation figures out at 1.2% for the year, down from 1.5% in the previous reading. This has caused severe sterling weakness and we will now have the fun spectacle of watching the pound roll with the punches throughout today’s trading. The only salvation for the pound is against the euro, where the German ZEW Economic Sentiment Survey came out at far worse than expectations – massively weakening the euro upon increased speculation that Germany will soon fall into recession.

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2586

Pessimism surrounded the pairing after poor CPI data yesterday and prior to unemployment data being released this morning the pairing fell to 1.255. The unemployment rate in the UK hit 6%, the lowest level since 2008 but this positive news has not led to a Sterling recovery as expected due to the claimant count under-performing.
Draghi's opening remarks in Frankfurt this morning saw no unexpected movement in the pairing however his main speech tonight at 19:00 may lead to positive movement within the Euro if he is more hawkish than expected.

UK CPI Inflation came in far below expectations yesterday as we saw inflation for the year fall to 1.2%, painting a worrying figure as July’s reading of 1.9% was far closer to the 2% target. This morning brought the UK unemployment rate and claimant count change which proved to be a mixed bag. UK interest rate hawks were eagerly awaiting these figures in the hope that they would lend strength to the pound, sadly the claimant count change underperformed whilst the unemployment rate showed an improvement from 6.2% to 6.0%. This should push estimates of interest rate rises in the UK firmly into the later part of 2015’s territory. On the European front, the growth outlook for Germany is looking bleak as forecasts are slashed from 1.8% in 2014 and 2% in 2015 to 1.2% in 2014 and 1.3% in 2015 respectively. This causes us to believe that GBP/EUR is still heavily overpriced in the euro’s favour and even with the recent poor UK data, we are expecting higher figures in the months to come. Today brings some Core Retail Sales and PPI figures from the US, meaning strong downside risks for currencies paired with the dollar.

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2486

In Frankfurt yesterday, Draghi provided no more indication for where the future of the Eurozone's economy is heading. In his opening remarks Draghi reiterated his desires to integrate all existing information into a European information system. Draghi’s questionable analogy yesterday, where he referred to information as “blood through veins” when it should be “organs beating in rhythm”, failed to provide a pulse in euro bulls.
Core CPI data out of the Eurozone has exceeded all expectations and the pairing begun its first push through the 1.249 mark but as of yet it has failed to breach the gates of resistance at 1.2485. Trading around the 1.25 mark, if German Buba President Weidmann provides subtle clues that give hope for the German economy, the pairing should power onwards and possibly hit 1.2480.

GBP/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2557

Yesterday morning saw strong data out of the Eurozone and the Euro was off to a flying start. However, as fresh data emerged from Spain and Greece the Euro hung in the air in exactly the same way that bricks don't and it fell with a bang, the pairing climbed from 1.2459 to 1.2565. Greek government bond yields soared to new heights as concern rose around Greece quitting the international bailout a year early and being unable to finance itself at sustainable rates.
Later this morning Buba President Weidmann is speaking in Riga and following Merkel's speech yesterday hopefully Weidmann will help take the yoke and steer us towards an indication of the future of Germany. Merkel's message yesterday was to stay on track and advised all Eurozone countries to stick to the budget rules, possibly a hint towards France's recent 2015 budget, which would shred promises relating to budgeting rules. Unless Weidmann provides any new information, range-bound movement can be expected as we close the week.

Yesterday afternoon’s stronger US data helped to limit dollar losses after its rivals launched a major offensive following the release of poor retail sales and PPI on Wednesday. The euro stormed out of the gates and rolled up the dollar’s carefully won ground, forcing it back into 1.28 territory. The US unemployment claims and Philly Fed Manufacturing Index showed surprising figures and growing confidence in the US business outlook, reinforcing the dollar and allowing it to redress the euro’s surge keeping the price from pushing higher towards 1.2850. Sadly for the dollar, whilst it’s attentions were focussed on a defensive strategy against the euro, the pound swooped in and carved out some healthy gains allowing cable to rally up above 1.61 this morning. Today’s quieter calendar should prove interesting as we see more US data releases with Building Permits and Fed Chair Yellen’s speech taking the headlines at 13:30. This has been a turbulent time for the triumvirate of sterling, euro and US dollar and whilst we may see calmer skies today, we will undoubtedly see the war rage on throughout next week’s trading.

GB/EUR: Currently trading at 1.2628

A strong weekend for the pound as an upward trend in the pairing prevailed. Last Friday saw no new data out of the UK and the pairing was therefore dependent on Eurozone releases, which were not positive for the euro. Germany came under heavy fire from the ECB, who urged Germany to relax their view on the EU’s strict fiscal rules. As the Eurozone was once so reliant on Germany’s economy, their unwillingness to adhere to ECB desires could create more Euro-area pessimism in the near future.
Bundesbank’s monthly report is due to be released later today, hawkish tones could create some optimism surrounding Germany’s future, however given Merkel’s and Weidmann’s speeches last week it is unlikely there will be any new positive clues regarding the future of German policy.

Last week was a struggle for the pound, having fallen victim to poor CPI data early in the week the outlook was bleak and clouded with strained tension. Luckily a spring of disappointing data from the US and a slightly better figure for unemployment in the UK helped sterling to bite back and finish either equal or slightly higher than when it started the week against most of its major peers. This week sees a slow start for the early sessions of Monday and Tuesday, with the climax of the action taking place on Wednesday. Wednesday will be crunch time for this week’s data calendar, with UK MPC minutes in the morning followed by US CPI inflation and Canadian reserve bank data threaded throughout the afternoon. Looking to today’s calendar, it is extremely quiet with Canadian Wholesale sales data dominating the headline at 13:30 and Fed member Powell speaking at 15:00. Current trends should continue, with range-bound trading anticipated.
