A: The interest rates have not gone up, and the eurozone rates have.

B: Inflation in the UK is higher than expected.

Let's hope this is a sustained rise, it's been up and down like a yo yo these past few months, hopefully the UK retaining it's AAA credit rating today will help sterling, although the UK Government doesn't really want a strong pound inorder to encourage exports, not that they have seen any growth recently though!

I would have to disagree (what,s new on here!) regarding the rate being up and down for the last few months. In actual fact it has remained steadfastly at about 1.14 certainly for 2/3 months. The rate just now is 1.17047 and has remained like that for about 24 hours. Hopefully it,ll stick and twist, upwards, over the next month and on into the new year!

When I talk about up and down... I mean from around 1.10-1.16, which it has been doing over the past few months, it hit 1.10 in July, increased somewhat to then drop to 1.12 in early Sept, rebounded to a high of 1.16 in mid Sept. That's the joy of currency trading for you, although it does seem to have found support at the 1.13/1.14 level over the past few weeks.

Typically it has dropped back again today and is now rapidly approaching 1.16

1.12 is the rate if you want to buy Euros (sell sterling)
If you want to buy sterling, so rate should be around 1.17, that mean for 117 Euros you will get 100 pounds ;) as i know in England rate is around 1.20

Today the Post Office is selling the Euro at 1.1313

CaxtonFx are selling at 1.1310, which is low for them, as they are usually offering a rate of 1cent above the PO.

There has been a change over the last fifteen minutes as Caxton have changed slightly to 1.1350
Its a very small rise, but still worth watching, as before the end of the day you maybe able find you can afford that extra €1 pint if you exchange £100!:yum:

Is this a viable option for a holiday maker?, it does not seem to make sense to me as you charge a administration charge of £5 per transaction, unless your exchange rates are a lot better than say...Caxtonfx or a local exchange shop who charge no commision after the quoted rate, plus with Caxtonfx and other debit cards that you preload in the UK, you pay no charges at ATM's in a euro zone country.:dontknow:

The exchange rates on offer have been fluctuating for most of today, I think we might have to wait a few more days for it to settle, but if I can get a few cents more for my pound today/tomorrow, then I might make a move. Whatever I do, then it will be a bit of a gamble, but for the small amount that me as a holiday maker will exchange its no big deal.;)

You're not in Tenerife are you? If someone posts on here that it's 1.13, that is the rate selling in the exchange shops. Out of the 1.16 you're quoting (which is what the bank buy at), they give the shops a rate of about 1.145 and the shops sell on at 1.13. Any body changing money at a bank is subject to a minimum charge of 9 euros, and on £100, thats quite a big commission.

Looking at your signature and number of posts, you are breaking quite a few forum rules, which for some reason nobody has pointed out to the moderators.

It's obvious you're on here to make a buck and don't give a stiff about Tenerife or anybody on the forum for that matter.

Always get a great rate from Red Arrows shop and it always works out better walking in with Sterling that using any of the companies once charges are added and commission taken.

Whilst I understand a resident moving large quantities of cash bank to bank (which I would advise anyone to do), putting a few hundred quid on a holiday card, even with a better exchange rate will negate itself once that card is produced in certain shops and restaurants etc. Most will charge 1-2% for the transaction. Once the moneys on the card, you can't get it off and you also can't get a balance figure.

It can be a risk, but not all cards charge for using them in shops/restaurants/atm's. I use a Caxton FX card and I can check the balance on line. I probably lose out a few cents here and there but overall I'm very, very happy with them. If I use the euro card in the euro zone - there are no charges at all.

yep its a debit card, don't use it to get cash but if you do its 12.9% per annum so you get charged a daily rate. All we use it for here is to pay at the supermarket and restaurants and we pay it off each month so incur no charges. Used it in the USA and got cash but logged on each night to pay it off to only get charged 1 day. Look on there website it fully explains it on there.

I see from the converter on the right that the exchange rate is now €1.19 to £1. Are business owners in Tenerife looking forward to seeing more Brits now or will they just replace other nationalities from Eurozone countries.

The Clarity Card gives you the interbank rate so today it would have been a maximum of 1.1939 which was todays high, it has fallen back a bit now just below 1.192.

The Pound seems to be investors preferance when it comes to the Euro at the moment, Cameron using the veto appeared to be the catalyst for the rise, we will see how long it lasts! Could see a push into the 1.20's if sentiment remains.

If you go regurlarly it's worth looking at online exchange sites like Currency Fair. Some-one on this forum recommended them and I found them to be the best by far.

They match prople selling euros with people buying them so the rate is very much better. You can transfer money direct from your bank account, which generally takes 2 or 3 hours to reach them, then either take the best rate offered or wait for a better rate. Then it's 3 euros to transfer it to your euro bank account.

It's saved me a fortune,especially with buying and renovating the house.

It's also fun to 'gamble' on what rate you will hold out for. :scared:

I changed £3000 this week and got 3 euros short of 3600. Then 3 euro to transfer. Happy bunny. :D

Just a quick update on how it's working with today as an example.

There is currently £1691 available in euros at a rate of 1.1911. When that's gone the next amount is £62,592 at 1.1907, then £75,402 at 1.1900.
So you can take any small part (or all) of the best available.

Then there are people waiting for a better rate - £28,202 at 1.1950, £5,000 at 1.1977 etc.

So, as an example, if I have £500, I could take the 1.1911 or wait for better. Personally, if I wanted the money today, but at a better rate, I would put in an order at 1.1949 which would put me a little ahead of the £28,202.

Takes a bit of getting your head around but basically it's simple - take the best rate at the time or hang on for better. :c2:

I have a bank account that doesn't charge me for foreign currency transactions.

I have found over the last five years that I often get a BETTER rate just withdrawing from cash-tills - it is certainly never any worse a rate - and I don't have to carry cash over there or around when I am there. I can withdraw 10 Euros or 100 Euros if I want - it doesn't matter.
Obviously may be different if you are living on the island, but if your main bank account is still in the UK, it may be worth looking at.

I found this company that give a very good exchange rate. This will be of interest to people who have a Spanish bank account and an English one and are looking at exchanging only small amounts with no minimum amount. The sort of amounts to keep money in an account for utilities for instance.
They charge £1 for an amount up to £300 or euros if exchanging in reverse, a bit more for larger amounts. I was a bit nervous of trying it but gave it a go and the money arrived in my spanish bank in two days, no problem.

I shall use them again, I can do that whenever I need to without messing with contracts or stating a certain amount on certain dates. The rate they quote when you order is the rate that you will see on the likes of xe.com.

No need to worry,the exchange rate as Iam told is going to keep going up,good for holiday-makers but not so good for Spain,nevertheless Iam going to have a very good holiday this year,In Italy.............its what spain needs.last year a tourist was gettin 500e for 500 quid,now they get 600e,so 100e more to spend.:)exports to non euro countrys become cheaper,so in theory they will buy more

the actual rate is 1.24 euros to the pound thats the international trading rate market rate ,we only get 1.22 as an example ,i believe it will head to 1.30 to the uk pound good time to speculate on currency time to trade back to euros next week

you can expect to get 1.20-1.24 over this summer but make good use of this rate. even though the euro is going through a difficult time so is the british economy, they are thinking about more " quantitative " this month or july at the latest. the uk cannot afford a higer exchange rate than it is now, which will keep the euro /sterling more a less at this rate regardless of the euros problems unless as i think it eventually collapses and in that case we are all f**ked.

If you had shopped around you would have got 1.22 euros per pound! Check the official rate and you should only really be 2 cents off at the exchange shops.

Well I am not getting 1.28. At the exchange shop it's 1.23, in our bank here I moved £720 from sterling account two days ago and they did it at just over 1.26
I try use my nationwide credit card when here, they give good rate of exchange..usually just under what the bank does. It's worth using their card abroad. Watch out tho as some restaurants do their own exchange rate..on the bill ....and it's not good!
