Always a popular topic!
Post on here the rates you see in the street. Or if, you have your own shop, let us know what you are offering.
It´s often cheaper to change your money in Tenerife so updates are very helpful.

Its still May 2011, and the commercial rate is 1.152989, so you should be avble to get 1.12 to 1.13 at exchange shops in Tenerife tomorrow. Probably 1.09 to 1.11 in UK

If the 'eurozone' is deep in the brown stuff, why is the exchange rate so bad? Even the dollar is doing well against the euro!!!!!!!!!

A: The interest rates have not gone up, and the eurozone rates have.

B: Inflation in the UK is higher than expected.

C: Consumer spending is down in the UK.

Surely inflation rates are worse in Greece, Portugal and Spain, to name only 3 Euro countries, some of these euro countries are in meltdown, inflation is at an all time high in the US, we are supposed to be on the road to recovery!!!!!
Surely the low interest rate is a bonus!!
And still the bankers want bonuses

Let's hope this is a sustained rise, it's been up and down like a yo yo these past few months, hopefully the UK retaining it's AAA credit rating today will help sterling, although the UK Government doesn't really want a strong pound inorder to encourage exports, not that they have seen any growth recently though!

I would have to disagree (what,s new on here!) regarding the rate being up and down for the last few months. In actual fact it has remained steadfastly at about 1.14 certainly for 2/3 months. The rate just now is 1.17047 and has remained like that for about 24 hours. Hopefully it,ll stick and twist, upwards, over the next month and on into the new year!

Dan747
04-10-2011, 14:56
When I talk about up and down... I mean from around 1.10-1.16, which it has been doing over the past few months, it hit 1.10 in July, increased somewhat to then drop to 1.12 in early Sept, rebounded to a high of 1.16 in mid Sept. That's the joy of currency trading for you, although it does seem to have found support at the 1.13/1.14 level over the past few weeks.

Typically it has dropped back again today and is now rapidly approaching 1.16

Today the Post Office is selling the Euro at 1.1313

CaxtonFx are selling at 1.1310, which is low for them, as they are usually offering a rate of 1cent above the PO.

It could be worth keeping a close eye on exchange rates today as there might be a sudden change in the market, but alas no good for me...I am pot-less!

I confess, Ecky, that I don't really care if my friends get 1.12 or 1.13 but I'll tell them about the Post Office, thanks. I'm wondering if I'm suddenly going to find the few paltry euros in my Spanish bank account are going to disappear into a black hole or change into pesetas!

If you want a better rate, send me an email. We will quote you from the live market and are the only currency exchange in the UK that doesn't pay our traders a commission.

We consistantly beat our competitors for this reason.

I'm waiting for our ad to go up in the forum, however I have already submitted a blog post.

See one of my guides in my signature. All proceeds go to this forum.

Is this service open to us that come to Tenerife on holiday or is it for residents, also is it a debit card transaction or cash?

alex_spain
03-11-2011, 11:24
The service is open to anyone internationally, whether you are coming to Tenerife on holiday or for residents. For residents, we have a regular payment plan which very useful for sending funds to and from Tenerife. I advise anyone to get in touch with me currently doing this. I am very confident we will be able to reduce the costs of these payments. The regular payments guide is in my signature.

We only deal in bank to bank transfers. Payment values can range from as little as £100 to many £1,000,000's. Other than the difference in the exchange rate, the only charge is £5 for payments under £3000. This is considerably less than banks and other currency exchanges.

Let me know your requirements and I can see if we are able to help. It might be better if this is done by email, or my colleague can have a quick chat with you.

I will be submitting another blog post tomorrow. If there is any aspect of currency exchange you would like this to be about, let me know.

This rate is appaling. The current interbank rate is 1.1637, therefore the bank is more than 3 cents different.

You said the bank doesn't charge any commission. I'm sure it doesn't. But where the bank will make it's money is between where they buy and sell the currency. i.e. between 1.16 and 1.13.

On a figure of £100,000, this would equate to £3,000.

The exchange rates on offer have been fluctuating for most of today, I think we might have to wait a few more days for it to settle, but if I can get a few cents more for my pound today/tomorrow, then I might make a move. Whatever I do, then it will be a bit of a gamble, but for the small amount that me as a holiday maker will exchange its no big deal.;)

You're not in Tenerife are you? If someone posts on here that it's 1.13, that is the rate selling in the exchange shops. Out of the 1.16 you're quoting (which is what the bank buy at), they give the shops a rate of about 1.145 and the shops sell on at 1.13. Any body changing money at a bank is subject to a minimum charge of 9 euros, and on £100, thats quite a big commission.

Looking at your signature and number of posts, you are breaking quite a few forum rules, which for some reason nobody has pointed out to the moderators.

It's obvious you're on here to make a buck and don't give a stiff about Tenerife or anybody on the forum for that matter.

You're in the wrong place if you think everyone on here's got thousands to exchange.

Always get a great rate from Red Arrows shop and it always works out better walking in with Sterling that using any of the companies once charges are added and commission taken.

No I am not in Tenerife?

I never quoted 1.16.

“The current interbank rate is 1.1637, therefore the bank is more than 3 cents different.”

In terms of the rules, I am an official sponsor of the forum. Our logos should be going up in a week. Regarding the number of posts, I have only just started on the forum.

I’m not here to make a buck, as I have already mentioned none of our staff are paid a commission.

I recommended Caxton FX’s currency card for holiday makers. However, it is worth comparing our rate of exchange when making a bank to bank transfer.

Your post is unprovoked and aggressive. I really don’t understand. Our company still makes money, but a much smaller margin compared to the banks and a more competivive exchange rate compared to other currency exchanges.

Waffle on as much as you like, but you have never given a straight answer to my post and in one of your posts #71 you did invite questions, so now is your opportunity to give a reply to it!

As a reminder to my question it was......
What rate of exchange would you give today on £100, plus what charges do you make and where in Tenerife would I be able to access my money?

I have already said we deal with a live market. It is changing all the time. The interbank rate is 1.158. Our margin is at most 1% . Therefore roughly betwen 1.15 and 1.158.

We only deal with bank to bank transfers, which has been mentioned and our charges.

Whilst I understand a resident moving large quantities of cash bank to bank (which I would advise anyone to do), putting a few hundred quid on a holiday card, even with a better exchange rate will negate itself once that card is produced in certain shops and restaurants etc. Most will charge 1-2% for the transaction. Once the moneys on the card, you can't get it off and you also can't get a balance figure.

It can be a risk, but not all cards charge for using them in shops/restaurants/atm's. I use a Caxton FX card and I can check the balance on line. I probably lose out a few cents here and there but overall I'm very, very happy with them. If I use the euro card in the euro zone - there are no charges at all.

Sterling surged against the euro yesterday after investor concerns over the EU summit saw sterling jump above €1.18/£1 for the first time since February as investors shed the single currency. The single currency shed 1% against a stronger pound after Friday’s EU summit failed to restore confidence that policymakers could reach a solution. The main headline for the UK has been David Cameron’s decision to veto the EU treaty on Friday and there was talk that this could isolate the UK from Europe in the long term. Despite this, many analysts expect sterling to strengthen against the euro as European policymakers struggle to implement new rules. Out later today there is inflation data so ensure you stay on top of rates and call in to speak to one of the team.

In the euro zone, the euro plummeted as analysts struggled to comprehend how the 17 euro zone nations would implement the new tougher measures agreed on Friday. Following the UK veto, it is up to the remaining countries in the EU to enact laws to entrench binding debt ceilings and punishments, but many analysts are struggling to comprehend how quickly this will address the immediate concerns over liquidity. In terms of data, there is economic sentiment data released tomorrow which is likely to have dropped on last month.

I see from the converter on the right that the exchange rate is now €1.19 to £1. Are business owners in Tenerife looking forward to seeing more Brits now or will they just replace other nationalities from Eurozone countries.

As it stands in this country people seem to be holding onto their money even more in the last few months. I have been down into town here to see if it seems any busier than in my shop. Afraid not, considering it is 1 week before Christmas it is more like mid-February.

Emskie, that is why we use the Clarity card it is not prepaid, all the restaurants and shops accept it providing you have ID. All you need to do is pay off the bill before the end of the month and you don't get charged. Yesterday did our shopping in Iceland and Mercadona paid on the card, checked on the internet today and we got a rate of 1.187 to the pound, as said in previous post best rate we saw on the island was 1.16. You can then use a prepaid card for getting cash out at no charge or just bring a small amount of sterling to exchange when required. Todays rate on the card is 1.20 per pound getting better all the time

The rate your getting (€1.20) is brilliant, it maybe even better than the official bank rate, with CaxtonFx today the rate is €1.164.

The reason I use CaxtonFx is that when I am over in Tenerife I know what money I have available to spend and not worry about exchange rates, I can withdraw the money easily with no charges. If I was living in Tenerife, I think I would do what you do and use the Halifax Clarity card.

The Clarity Card gives you the interbank rate so today it would have been a maximum of 1.1939 which was todays high, it has fallen back a bit now just below 1.192.

The Pound seems to be investors preferance when it comes to the Euro at the moment, Cameron using the veto appeared to be the catalyst for the rise, we will see how long it lasts! Could see a push into the 1.20's if sentiment remains.

The £ is certainly on the up against the single currency now. The UK seems to have gained some 'safe-haven' status thanks to all the gloom and impending doom in the Eurozone. If you believe what you read the 1.24 high of Summer '10 is soon to be broken with 1.3 not impossible by the spring/summer (assuming the euro lasts that long).

If you go regurlarly it's worth looking at online exchange sites like Currency Fair. Some-one on this forum recommended them and I found them to be the best by far.

They match prople selling euros with people buying them so the rate is very much better. You can transfer money direct from your bank account, which generally takes 2 or 3 hours to reach them, then either take the best rate offered or wait for a better rate. Then it's 3 euros to transfer it to your euro bank account.

It's saved me a fortune, especially with buying and renovating the house.

It's also fun to 'gamble' on what rate you will hold out for. :scared:

I changed £3000 this week and got 3 euros short of 3600. Then 3 euro to transfer. Happy bunny. :D

Just a quick update on how it's working with today as an example.

There is currently £1691 available in euros at a rate of 1.1911. When that's gone the next amount is £62,592 at 1.1907, then £75,402 at 1.1900.
So you can take any small part (or all) of the best available.

Then there are people waiting for a better rate - £28,202 at 1.1950, £5,000 at 1.1977 etc.

So, as an example, if I have £500, I could take the 1.1911 or wait for better. Personally, if I wanted the money today, but at a better rate, I would put in an order at 1.1949 which would put me a little ahead of the £28,202.

Takes a bit of getting your head around but basically it's simple - take the best rate at the time or hang on for better. :c2:

We are fully regulated as an Authorised Payments Institution by the Central Bank of Ireland (equivalent to the FSA in the UK) under the European Payment Services Regulations, and hold all customer funds in segregated client accounts with a major global (not Irish) bank.

Important to note though, that Crown Currency was a pre-order site where people had money in for a long time in advance to get a fixed rate. The company was gambling with peoples money. Not at all the same as exchanging money on the day. I do leave GBP there sometimes, waiting for a better rate within the next week or so, but you don't have to do that if you are uneasy.

That's the banks rate - totally maningless. You might get close with Currency Fair but expect around 3% or 4% less on the street I would guess.

i find it a better rate to change my pounds to euros at the exchange places in tenerife than putting my pounds into my euro account as I get a better rate doing it that way as bank rate is always lower, I only ever change a few quid over here just to put me on for the first day or so then change it in tenerife as always a better rate, that's why I wanted to know what the rate is on the rock at the moment, in the south of the island :wink2:

Thanx gsc for helpful info

Think we are all looking for best rates for our money
In Scotland we find Ramsden's and Cheque Centre give best rates
Also find Fairfx card that you preload gives competitive rate and has MasterCard guarantee if things go wrong with purchase etc.

Thomas Cook 1.167
Post Office 1.166
RationalFX 1.1677 (min £500 no charges)
RationalFX 1.1794 (min £5000 no charges)

That doesn''t mean anything unless you know WHERE you can actually get that rate - and usually you can't. :goodluck:

Quote from RationalFX:
Today we are waiting to see if Greece can reach an agreement on its debt swaps.
This is widely expected to go ahead and lead to the full bailout package being
agreed on Monday 12th March!

This will demonstrate unity and stability in the Eurozone and ultimately
strengthen the euro! We have already seen almost a 1% improvement against a
basket of currencies, especially the UK pound and the US dollar!

If you are a euro buyer or seller it would be worth taking a look at your
requirements now to ensure you do not get caught buying at a lower rate.

I have a bank account that doesn't charge me for foreign currency transactions.

I have found over the last five years that I often get a BETTER rate just withdrawing from cash-tills - it is certainly never any worse a rate - and I don't have to carry cash over there or around when I am there. I can withdraw 10 Euros or 100 Euros if I want - it doesn't matter.
Obviously may be different if you are living on the island, but if your main bank account is still in the UK, it may be worth looking at.

my bank charges to withdraw foreign currency and also their rate has never been as good as the exchange places so only use that as a last resort, they even charge to use my debit card if i purchase any thing with it, you are limited to what you can draw out over in tenerife at the atms too, as you are in england, the amount i want to bank into my spanish account is more than i can draw out at an atm

I found this company that give a very good exchange rate. This will be of interest to people who have a Spanish bank account and an English one and are looking at exchanging only small amounts with no minimum amount. The sort of amounts to keep money in an account for utilities for instance.
They charge £1 for an amount up to £300 or euros if exchanging in reverse, a bit more for larger amounts. I was a bit nervous of trying it but gave it a go and the money arrived in my spanish bank in two days, no problem.

I shall use them again, I can do that whenever I need to without messing with contracts or stating a certain amount on certain dates. The rate they quote when you order is the rate that you will see on the likes of xe.com.

you can expect to get 1.20-1.24 over this summer but make good use of this rate. even though the euro is going through a difficult time so is the british economy, they are thinking about more " quantitative " this month or july at the latest. the uk cannot afford a higer exchange rate than it is now, which will keep the euro /sterling more a less at this rate regardless of the euros problems unless as i think it eventually collapses and in that case we are all f**ked.

Well I am not getting 1.28. At the exchange shop it's 1.23, in our bank here I moved £720 from sterling account two days ago and they did it at just over 1.26
I try use my nationwide credit card when here, they give good rate of exchange..usually just under what the bank does. It's worth using their card abroad. Watch out tho as some restaurants do their own exchange rate..on the bill ....and it's not good!
