I'm going out walking with a girlfriend now every Sunday morning to get a little exercise. After an hour or so of walking up and down hills we stop for a drink and some people watching,

Today (Jan. 8, 2012) was a beautiful blue sky day in Puerto de la Cruz. The birds were out and preparing to nest.
My garden is full of blackbirds again and this morning I heard a blackcap warbler singing. Their song is special and distinctive.

Here's my back garden before I left today, followed by a lovely little greenfinch, called a verderon in Spanish, who posed nicely on a branch for me as we walked around La Paz.

http://canarybird.smugmug.com/LIFE/Fallwinter2011-12/i-mdbKV9v/0/L/P1130755-ed-L.jpg

Afterward we walked by the French restaurant where we met some friends and then sat outside Supermercado 2000 for a cold drink in the sunshine.

http://canarybird.smugmug.com/LIFE/Fallwinter2011-12/i-6hPVkK8/0/L/P1130759-ed-L.jpg

We met two Finnish ladies who had just arrived here on the island. They had been without electricity for over a week after a bad storm in Finland and had endured very cold weather. They were enjoying so much to sit outdoors and have their lunch in the Tenerife sunshine.

I sometimes need to be reminded of how cold and dull it can be in other parts of the world at this time of the year.

Aren't we lucky to live here! :)

I note the excellent depth of field with the Bird/branch Shot.
Not enough Light here for that either.....
Excellent.. Thankyou.

lovely photos Canrybird, thanks for sharing with us ...

Added after 25 minutes:

I'm taking a great interest in your Tenerife Journal, Canarybird, I'm now on the 4th "older post", and really enjoying it. I'll go back later to carry on enjoying the photos and reading all the interesting posts that go with them......

Thank you balcon...I've been away from Tenerife Journal far too long due to a computer crash and an illness in the family, but I've got my new computer now set up and am getting material together so I can return in the next days and get back to where I was. I do enjoy photographing Tenerife and writing about the things I see! Thanks for your kind comment.

Thanks Warbey.... I was using a long zoom to get that bird on the branch and was surprised at how clear he came out. The light was strong today as well.

Thanks Beerfan...I'll add in a few pics taken on previous recent Sunday walks, although they may have been posted earlier on the TNF North Weather thread.

Living statue downtown. I still couldn't figure out how the water kept flowing out of the jug.
He must have had a little hose hidden in his clothing and attached to a pump below. Clever!

I had a German beer outside Pepito's in La Paz! Took them forever to bring it and they were a bit grumpy too (think I have a photo of the spot but don't want to hijack your thread). Oh, and I had a glass of Krombacher Pils at that Krombacher Inn place. Expensive but I needed it.

I recognise that place with the bridge (opposite the botanical gardens) as that's where I had that rather expensive meal.

I'll be back in Puerto de la Cruz in just over three weeks too although not based in La Paz this time (I'm on Carretera del Botánico) so I'll have hundreds more photos to share!

Excellent photos and I love the 'look' that you bring to them - very much like a slightly dated postcard. :)

(Sorry, lot of "I" statements there.) ;)

Thank you Beerfan. The area where you described your hotel location in another post is mainly residential and is further up the hill than La Paz so you'll need to bring some good walking shoes.

I've lived here in La Paz for over 25 years but I've never actually been inside or sat outside Pepitos's Bar, but I do like to take photos of the people who do sit there. :)

And opposite the Botanical Gardens there are four restaurants, each one slightly different from the others. The ones in the center are favourite meeting places for locals.

I like to have lunch there sometimes after visiting the gardens. ( I know which is the expensive one.....I usually go to one of the others.)

Thank you Beerfan. The area where you described your hotel location in another post is mainly residential and is further up the hill than La Paz so you'll need to bring some good walking shoes.

I later decided against that one as it was so far away! It would have been only about £15 more than the one I eventually chose (Tenerife Ving) for breakfast and dinner than the Ving but having realised the distance we would have to travel from the town centre (or even La Paz) combined with the rather repetitive nature of the menu I decided that choosing somewhere nearer the town centre would be a better idea, even if it meant paying slightly more or getting a little less for one's pennies. And also if you're based in the town centre you don't have to worry about having to find taxis back as much. (La Maison Belge is only 1km walk from our hotel so if we break it up by finding some food and another bar or two on the way back, we're golden.) :)

The Tenerife Ving is on the outskirts of the town centre. It's on the same street as the bus station (Avenida de los Hermanos Fernández Perdigón) but further down and away. So it's right at the end of the town. It was £210 for the week for two people inc. breakfast.

I've lived here in La Paz for over 25 years but I've never actually been inside or sat outside Pepitos's Bar

Again, like many of the other bars it's German run. This can obviously be evinced through the German dishes listed in German and English on the board outside. :)

but I do like to take photos of the people who do sit there. :)

I'd best go at night then - unless you've got a camera with a fast low-light lens... ;)

And opposite the Botanical Gardens there are four restaurants, each one slightly different from the others.

Yes, I was quite surprised to see that many restaurants in such a space like that.

(I know which is the expensive one.....I usually go to one of the others.)

I'll name it - it's the Terraza del Botánico on Calle Retama.

All the best! :)

No that's not the restaurant I meant Beerfan.

http://canarybird.smugmug.com/Other/Getting-There/PA237926-Terraza-del-Botanico/1061797234_bwaqQ-M.jpg

The Terraza del Botanico is one that I have used frequently over the years although the owner, one of a family which owns two or three of those restaurants, has moved downtown to the Cofradia de Pescadores, a fish restaurant in the fishermens' central offices down by the harbour, near Plaza del Charco. Terraza del Botanico has now been renovated and has some new staff.

The more up market and also new restaurant I was referring to, where I've been for special meals is this one:

http://canarybird.smugmug.com/Travel/Out-and-About-in-Tenerife-1/P1030471-mar-9-wx-pm/1211817951_G5yte-L.jpg

The interior also appears in my Sunday walk photos of yesterday.

I almost forgot to mention that the Tenerife Ving Hotel is downtown and yes you will be right in the area near the bus stops and post office and not far from the beach. It has always been known as a hotel for mainly Scandinavian visitors. You were wise to move from the other as I think you would have been tired of having to walk or take taxis just to get near the town. There you can get to the beach in a ten minute walk.

Gotcha. :)

Understood - although I still think that €9 for chicken and a bit of cous-cous and some potato is taking the mick a bit.

Gotcha.

While I'm about it, can you recommend any any specific restaurants/eateries/cafés for me to knock up whilst I'm in town again in early February please? :)

I almost forgot to mention that the Tenerife Ving Hotel is downtown and yes you will be right in the area near the bus stops and post office and not far from the beach.

I actually had it mixed up with yet another hotel I was looking at, which was on the Carretera del Botánico and which was also apartments. It would have meant that we were closer to the epicentre but never mind. I hadn't realised that there was quite some distance between the two. I'll take plenty of photos of everything though... as is my wont.

It has always been known as a hotel for mainly Scandinavian visitors.

S'alright by me - I like the Nordic countries and their peoples anyway (although they're damn expensive!). I know this next statement will make my about as popular on this forum as a big wet fart in a cramped lift but I generally go on holiday not to stay in a little enclave full of my fellow countrymen. ;)

You were wise to move from the other as I think you would have been tired of having to walk or take taxis just to get near the town.

The walk from La Paz was far enough so, yes, I think you are absolutely spot on there.

There you can get to the beach in a ten minute walk.

Splendid! Also I'm not a lover of the beach. Too many other things to do and one can always get a bit of a tan walking about the place. ;)

Thanks for your help by the way. :)

Without trying to distract from Canarybirds beautiful photographs you may find the "Regulo Restaurant" Calle de Perez Zamora, or the "Lacosona Restaurant" in the Plaza Charco, which has one of the most beautiful interiors that you could imagine, are both worth a visit, but be warned the Regulo is not cheap.:)

Carol55....the restaurant you mean is called La Casona and as you enter Plaza del Charco from the harbour it's on your right.

Some very old pics of mine of La Casona:

And my favourite restaurant in Puerto de la Cruz is Tito's Bodeguita, in the San Nicolas area, open all day every day except Sundays.
Good food, inexpensive, served in a beautiful garden. Best to reserve as it's so popular with the locals.

Slideshow includes some repeats of the food as I've been there so often...and a couple of my friends are in there too.

SLIDESHOW of TITO's (http://canarybird.smugmug.com/photos/swfpopup.mg?AlbumID=18600955&AlbumKey=f55f89)

I have other good restaurant suggestions but I'll leave that for now on this thread.

Off subject a little but I have friends in the Anatolia go there most weeks to take them shopping!!

Added after 4 minutes:

I can also recommend Titos a lovely place to go.

also La Boheime just off the square but only for special occasions maybe a little expensive I would perhaps say prices similar to Regulo.

My favourite walk on a Sunday afternoon was from the Hotel Las Vegas, along San Telmo, up the steps, turn right, walk down and take the right fork to the "Molly Malone" where, depending on who was around, we used to bring a small Bar upstairs and have some big Jam Sessions on the pavement area with Des, Myself and various Itinerant Musicians who just happened to turn up. Great Times with some Great People. Unforunately I haven't been there for a few years due to other commitments. Maybe some day !!! I should also mention that this didn't only happen on a Sunday !!! SLANJE !!!!

There seems to be an abundance of preforming artists in Puerto recently, my favourite is a quartet they play fantastis music! You cant beat a good walk in Puerto when the sun is shining and with all the up and down walking its great for the legs!! For me (from where I live) I like to ponder into town and walk along the front as there is always so much going on. Then stop for a bite to eat in the harbour, continue along the front passed Punto Bravo and loop back up, a great way to pend a lazy Sunday!!!

Not wanting to hijack Canarybirds thread but here is a message for Beerfan.

Here is somewhere to eat if you like lamb shank cooked to perfection and it is close to The Ving.
Los Petite Los Angeles. This restaurant is to be found just before you reach the Hotel Turquesa on the left maybe 500m from the Ving.

They do a Prawns in Garlic for a starter, lamb shoulder for main, ice cream or coffee to finish on their meal of the day for 14 Euro. I have been three times and it was excellent each time. Lots of other choices apparently one of their specialities is the fish encased in rock salt. Never got past the lamb myself it is so good. Lovely atmosphere, family run and a bargain meal.

Another often ovelooked place is Casa Marias actually called Casa Acapulco it is in a back alley in Punta Brava. Very well known for Langostines at a bargain price. It is a bit 'spit and sawdust' but the food is good. Walk along the the main road to Punta Brava. When the road narrows on the edge of the village take the road that drops down steeply to the right Casa Marias about 50 metres on the left. It is just a door and a window in the wall but opens out inside there is no terrace.

If you want a Brit bar for a change or just to pick up a Tenerife News then Stallones bar is very close to the Ving. A surly Spanish guy runs it but don't let that put you off, always a few local English residents there to have a chat.

I am going to be absolutely spoiled when I visit the island next! My mum loves prawns in garlic, so she'll be in her element. I'll let her know tomorrow morning.

Spit and sawdust doesn't bother me any - I'm used to it. All the better if the food is spot on. I don't come on holiday to do boring things. ;)

These are being duly noted and will be very much checked out - photos and full reports to follow, naturally. I will be logging these recommendations - all of them - and trying them for sure. Thank you very much!

This forum is full of lovely people and is a goldmine of information, which makes it so friendly and special. Many, many thanks.

Hi, as we live the other side of Puerto, in Las Arenas. We like to walk through Taoro Parque and the Jardines Taore, admiring the view of the town and bay. The gardens and waterfalls are much nice since they improved the paths. Then down past Bel Air, and into the old town. Our favorite stop for coffee is the City Cafe just off Plaza Charco.

I did a blog post last night about last Sunday's walk down to the plaza during carnival time and will be going again today, as there is a day carnival on with various events and music happening from 10:30 am down in Plaza del Charco. My friend and I will be walking down and I will be taking photos as well as hopefully trying out that paella again if we can find a place to sit down. Here's the blog post with a short video:

Hi Canarybird! You sound like you might know a little about the birds here! we have a little black cap very nearby that sings away all day (we only ever hear one) Do you know if this little bird sings at night? as we hear a little burst of song now and again even when it's dark! No not too many vinos! Promise!:D

PS. Loving all the pics! Thanks!!!

Suej....I've only heard the blackcap warblers during the day here. At night I'm probably indoors watching TV, writing on my computer or asleep :p, so I haven't been aware of any bursts of song from my garden.

I'll let you know if I find out anything though.

Megaloo....I'm trying to get in more walking....on Sundays and even to my Pilates class :D.

Got some more photos from the walk today and some amusing videos taken down in the plaza. Will post when I get them all sorted and edited.

Oh yes thank you Tailor! I sure do recognize those 70s photos as I was here working in the winters during those years, and remember those camels in the Plaza del Los Camelos and when they even walked down the Avenida leaving their trails on the road behind them :). And the photos of the plaza and seeing Gomez Baeza there, which was the first department store around.

Again thanks for posting them.

More. The famous Cafe Columbus and the Paseo San Telmo. Its funny the Jackie Kennedy look of the women ( last 60's).

canarybird
13-03-2012, 12:20
Yes I'm familiar with those scenes. Such a shame and a great mistake that they tore down the Cafe Columbus.
It was such a lovely place to go for coffee and cake, or meals sometimes and watch the waves breaking over the beach through those big view windows..

And the upstairs disco was also popular. They both brought such life to that corner of the waterfront.

There's still a Toledo gold shop in that part of San Telmo today.

Hi Tailor, it is lovely to see your old photographs. I first visited Puerto as a child with my parents in 1970, and remember some of these views. The area around Martianez seems to change every 10 years or so.

I've been told, by lots of Visitors to Puerto, that walks around Puerto at any time are blighted by the Russian Prostitutes around the Las Vegas Hotel at the start of San Telmo. Is there any truth in this or are they all lying ??? I haven't been to Puerto for many years but once was a very regular visitor !!! Prices, and lack of atmosphere, were also a factor in our going elsewhere, now a complete rip-off !!!

Rickiebear
27-03-2012, 06:18
Hi Fender, I have not seen any myself. If they are there they keep themselves out of the way. This area is also well patrolled by police.

dixie4
27-03-2012, 06:26
Not really noticed this myself, there again not in the market so I would not notice would I?

I do not find Puerto a rip off place in any shape or form. After a while living here you know where to go and where not. Where to go for a treat and pay that bit more or where to go for a good value lunch at 3.50 Euros or a Chinese banquet for 6.95.

Read this list, local knowledge from those that live here will guide you.

I find the South the place for rip off, poor food at silly prices. I recently ate at a restaurant in Costa Adeje because the food being served to a Spanish family looked fantastic. We ordered the same but got cr**.

But really it is my own fault I have no local knowledge in the South.

27-03-2012, 11:34
Again I have yet to see a problem, the Police are usually patrolling the front to keep an eye on people setting up a pitch to sell their wares that should not be there.

I also do not think you are ripped off here in the North.

Just going off topic a little Suej, but I had a very similar situation. I make cards and have various sites where we have designers etc, and share our designs with other members. There was an occasion where a "lady" posted a sheet that she said she had designed, and it happened to be one of my best friends designs which I recognised immediately, so I put a comment on the site because of the copyright situation for all to see, and low and behold she cancelled her membership .......... it's a very small world.

I have had my photos copied many times Sue but that's what happens when you put things on the internet. It's especially annoying when they clip off my watermark and/or reverse the photo image.
One of the ones I keep seeing online is my pic of arroz cubana (arroz a la cubana) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/canarybird/2697295094/in/set-72157605684754644) a rice, egg, tomato sauce and banana dish in which the egg turned out very nicely that day.

When I Google images for arroz cubana, my photo comes up on many sites, nearly always with the watermark clipped off.

But now I'm affiliated with Getty Images who are putting some of my photos up for sale under their licence and watermark, so I get paid when they are used. :)

My walking pal and I found the only empty table and after ordering drinks, she had salad and I took tortellini in cream sauce.

Well I haven't written anything here for quite a while but now I have some photos from today that I took downtown in Puerto and have made into a slideshow of 23 photos.

The first four are actually from January 30, and the rest (19) are from today. The streets downtown were full of people since it was a sunny blue sky day.

And I've never seen so many chairs, tables and umbrellas set up in the streets as there were today. It seems that every little bar or cafe now has chairs and tables in the street, since the indoor smoking ban came into effect and the conversion of traffic streets into pedestrian walks.

I walked with friends from the Martianez shopping center down past the Lido and San Telmo down to Plaza del Charco.

After a lunch at Cafe Columbus Plaza we walked back to the car by another route.

So here's the link to the photos (http://canarybird.smugmug.com/photos/swfpopup.mg?AlbumID=27789081&AlbumKey=JQz7zW)and I hope you like them!

(You can speed up slideshow by clicking on "fast" in upper left corner of screen.)

Hi Fender, I would disagree with you about Puerto being expensive. We fly out of Bristol and pay around £300 for two return fares. You can have a double room, bed and breakfast for 20€, in a central Puerto hotel. Supermarkets are cheaper than in the UK. Coffee from 1€, and a three course meal, with a drink, from 7,50€.

Fender, I have to disagree about the costs in the north. We have a place Los Cris and visit twice a year. On each visit we travel to puerto for a couple of nights. I cannot think of anything that is more expensive than the south or in the UK.

The quality of food/service/price in restaurants is far superior. If we didn't have three young children, I would gladly swap my place in Los Cris for puerto. There is a lot more for children in the south but when they grow older.............
