Hope to visit Santa Cruz soon and have a good wander around.

In terms of personal safety, are there any areas best avoided by tourists when wandering around Santa Cruz?

Conversely are there any places worth making a special effort to visit, that don't get the attention they deserve in the guidebooks?

Don't worry too much. Nothing wrong with central Santa Cruz. Take the normal precautions.

Try Parque Garcia Sanabria which you can find along Rambla del General Franco. A nd it's always worth a walkalong the water front.

Hi, we have always found tenerife very safe. Take the usual precautions with money and handbags, I am sure you will be OK. There is always a police presence, who are respected by the locals.
Santa Cruz is great for shopping.

I work up here and have never at any time felt unsafe
I would say take the precautions you would in any city but other than that nowhere is unsafe.

They now have a tour bus which will take you round and show all the city - then you can choose - great for shopping in the old town, plenty to do - take a trip up to La Laguna on the tram and you can also stop off at Science Museum.
There is a Military Museum at far end of Santa Cruz if that interests you as well as Concert Arena for music- plenty to do !
