JAVIER FEO, Arona
"The mistakes and errors that are being made by local government officials in Arona are more frequent and they put our local industry, tourism at risk” stated opposing politician, José Julián Mena.
"The beaches in the county have had no life guards because this service was not voted for in council meetings,” affirmed the press representative for the socialists.
"This unforgivable situation arose because the local government ordered information in November from the local technical department to try to increase the services offered which was then done. However, municipal authorities, adding to their previous disastrous management , forget to take this back to council and try to sneak the approval into the December Planning Commission, but the technical department warned that it would be unlawful to extend the servicethis way, "stressed Mena.
"The local government has continued along this line and has not taken any steps to unblock this problem to have rescue and surveillance on the beaches. So far this new year the council hasn’t brought us together to address this issue and the significance is that a service of this kind is not being provided for a county with tourism as its main income source, "he said.
The audit report of funds in the report 101 in 2011, warned that the extension of the contract should have been finalised “four months in advance of the previous contracts termination" of the service, which should have been made "expressly and by mutual agreement between the parties. "
The municipal document continues pointing out that “given that the contract was signed on the 12th of November 2009 and the length of the same was two years, this is now over.(…), therefore the continuation can ot be applied(…)leaving the beaches vuenrable” due to the law.
"Definatively, if both parties had wanted for the contract to continue then they should have reached an agreement in june of last year, said the councilor for PSC.
"Now what needs to happen if the local government wished to remain legal is to re offer the service allowing every business to take part in the offer. Another option would be for the Arona Council to manage this service themselves directly”, pointed out the boss of the oposition.
This way, José Julián Mena afirme seeing an enormous irresponsiblity from the municipal group, that again they have shown hat they do not have the municipal management under control, and they put the image of the Arona area in disarray”.
"This service which costs public money and annual ammount of 369.000 euros, not just to have lifeguards and protectin on the beach but also to provide swimming for discapacitadted persons and elderly” said Mena.
"¿How can they expect to be present at Fitur when they can not even provide the most basic service, what will they tell tour operators when they ask about our beaches"?, cuestiona Mena.

Typical Ayuntamiento de Arona. They get a huge increase in tourists and then forget to provide them with basic services. You couldn't make it up.They don't learn from the past when they neglected tourist and many of whom very quickly went elsewhere.
