Seriously miscalculated my medication quantity when coming out here on holiday. I urgently need at least 6 Bonefos 800mg (sodium clodronate)tablets.

Found out at the Famacia that these tablets are not available here in Tenerife.

Will gladly replace them by post when I return home to UK on Sunday.

Can anyone help me today Friday 20/01/2012?

I would go or ring Karen Whittaker 922 798 226 she has a surgery under the Arona Gran hotel in Los Cristianos, she opens at 8.30 the pills probably available just under a different name.

Found this website with all the other brand names for the drug, it does actually list the name in Spanish so i would suggest you try the chemist for it under its Spanish brand name.

The actual drug is called Clodronate, Benefos is just the brand name the company Bayer uses, one of many that produce it.

Acide Clodronique [INN-French]
Acido Clodronico [INN-Spanish]
Acidum Clodronicum [INN-Latin]
Bonefos (Bayer)
Clasteon (Sepracor)
Dichloromethanediphosphonic acid
Dichloromethylidene diphosphonate
Loron
Ostac

Contact your GP - it may be that it wont hurt you to lower the dose for a short while eg alternate days.

Thanks for the replies, I do not know where I would be without this list.

Armed with the Spanish name I intend to go to a different Famacia locally (I am in the North but can travel).

I am not the panic, panic type so I thought I could do without the tabs for a few days when I ran out. In fact the last two doses I took on alternate days to spin them out.

However, I spoke to a UK nurse last night who was over here on holiday and she scared the life out of me and said I must take them every day to regulate my calcium levels in my blood otherwise I could go into a coma and die. She did not pull any punches!

So there is a small amount of urgency.

The Chemist near the old Amblatoria (Miss spelt) just passed Post Office but on left passed old car park in Town is usually good for drugs or the one just at the side of the Dania Park Hotel and he speaks a little English. I have always found them very helpful especially if a drug is difficult to obtain.

I could be wrong here but if you have a EHIC card could you not go to a Medical Centre and obtain an emergency prescription (if applicable) for the same (Spanish equivalent) drug? this would save you having to pay out to see a GP if the drug is not available over the counter.

Thanks again to all who responded.

I finally got my tablets from the Farmacia in Charco Square in Puerto de la Cruz at 7pm Friday. This was after repeated refusals to even try and get them at numerous farmacias in in the south and north of the island. So a lesson learned!

Sorry for the late thanks, internet has not been working for me since Friday.

Must add that Dr Karen was fantastic and so helpful she told me much more info about why the tablets were so important than my specialist in UK! She is really up to date with all the latest information best 30 euros I have spent in a long time.
