J.FEO, Arona
The wealth and splendour that was Costa del Silencio & Ten-Bel in the seventies and eighties is remembered by the residents and tourists of these two zones, they showed their desperation in front of the Arona town hall, that nothing has been done to reactivate the area and recover the importance they once held for the area.
The plans to beautify and improve these areas during the last few years “has proved of little worth, because the local authorities have not maintained the improvements and now, for some time, you can see the deficiencies which are stopping the area from prospering”. Said neighbours from both communities.
The dirt is one of the principal problems “which can be seen in Costa del Silencio as well as in Ten-Bel, It accumulates everywhere. The cleaning staff are seldom seen and never seem to pick up the rubbish which is thrown on the ground or on the benches” assured residents.
"It is normal to see how there workers come across bottles, tins and boxes when they sweep and just leave them where they are. They only collect what their broom sweeps up and this they manage to put in the bins” commented a resident worriedly.
Local government should “remind the contract holders that this sort of behaviour has to stop, as our taxes pay for these cleaning services which are not being fulfilled” expressed the people at the town hall.
Added to this is “the lack of waste bins and this provokes the public to throw their rubbish on the floor a behaviour that is antisocial and that we also deplore”.
Another thing that preoccupies the residents it the appearance of the green areas in the area, “because they are in a state of complete and utter abandon and the consequence of that is that the plants are dead”.
The gardens are not watered
"It is shameful that trees have been planted and the left to die as, amongst other reasons they are not watered” added the residents.
They indicated that, “Sadly the majority of the green areas are becoming health risks as they have converted into meeting points for do owners and the animals do their business there without anyone clearing this up”.
"The animal poo is not collected and therefore causes bad smells and attracts flies” commented a neighbour indignantly.
Not only do they require more cleaning but rigorous application of local rules. “What is most important is that there are are local police patrolling”.
The absence of officers “is causing security in the area to be at its lowest level and it is unusual for a day to pass without robberies in shops and houses” commented another resident.
They indicated that the present situation has come about because “ certain walkways are shut although they are public, with this we think that the law is being broken".
“Another thing which is unbearable is that the bus stations have no shelter and the waits can be very long. The pathways are damaged and this can cause falls” they say.
"Also the sports areas are damaged and in a terrible condition” they explained.
The residents consider that Costa del Silencio & Ten-Bel could be converted into attractive areas which could generate income and add something as a tourist area “if local government wanted this to happen”.
"What can't continue it the system of sticking plaster, that things are fixed as an when, as has been the case in the last few years in this are of the county", they manifested.
"This was the starting point of tourism in Arona, but we have been forgotten and most of the investment has gone to Los Cristianos & Las Americas", they pointed out.
This is why they have approached the council led by José Alberto González Reverón to ask that a “real” plan of beautification and improvements is made for the areas around Costa del Silencio & Ten-Bel.
"A formula needs to be found so the town hall develops the Ten-Bel tower and this space is used as a cultural area with cinemas and space for a local police station and health centre” signalled the people who were complaining at the town hall. “This coast could be something very special with just a little imagination” they finished.
