Hi All
My wife and myself (52&65yo) are selling up in the UK and intend to rent 6 months in Tenerife(Los Cristianos) and 6 months in the UK.
We have private health insurance and would also like this in Tenerife also. We contacted our provider who quoted over £5k for the overseas cover.
We have our EH1C cards but would also like to be covered privately.
Can someone suggest whether the private cover is necessary and where we can get cover at a decent rate.

Many thanks

Barry & Gill

Private medical insurance is a good idea if you live permanently on the island.

Your EH1C card will only cover you for emergencies (as I understand it)

I think that the problem that you will have is that most insurances are for a period of a year - even though you do normally pay monthly.

Best bet is to check out the websites for DKV and Mapfre (the most popular insurers)

PS :welcome: to Tenerife Forum. Enjoy :)

Hi Billybackup

My husband and I also live 6 months in the UK and 6months in Tenerife. We have private medical insurance with BUPA, but as you say to extend that cover for Europe is prohibitive. Therefore, we took out a travel insurance policy that covers us for 168 days. The cost...........£210 (this includes extra cover for my husbands Asthma). Dental treatment is also covered. I'm sure you would be able to find something similar by going on Websites like Money Supermarket, Go Compare etc.

Good Luck

Hi, we're staying for around 103 days and have found staysure to be really good. Only charging £119 for two of us (both healthy young pensioners)

Hi I am not a new member however this is my first time on here since the site changed along with a name change so hello everyone.
My husband and I (young pensioners) both have private health in the UK and go backwards and forwards and used to have health cover for single trips, however I was lucky enough to have worked here for a while with a contract so we both registered in the system - my contract ran out in January and I have not been able to find work since, so we will need to get health cover again I would prefer a yearly policy but all the ones I have looked at have a maximum stay of 90 days any one trip can any members recommend a company that covers longer - thank you.

hi i think lesbros and maxbaby seem to have found insurance for one trip long stay, am i right because i like you have found most travel/health insurance is for 30-45 days or up to 90 days if upping the premium and having to prove pre-booked dates of return flights if claiming.

PM forum member TIS, they are agents for DKV Health. And if you are a member of Live Arico there discounts are as high as 30%. But PM him and he will explain everything :)

Sorry, I can't remember as I am back in the UK and I left the policy in Tenerife. I do know that I went via the Go Compare Website.

Hi billybackup thanks - funny I am looking at that site at the moment - we used to just have a one off insurance say for 5months or whatever however if for any reason we had to or wanted to go back during the 5months that insurance used to become invalid and we would have to take out another single insurance for the rest of the time.
That is why I am looking for an annual insurance with a high number of days permitted in any one trip
Look at money.co.uk

Hi- we bank with RBS on Gold account which gives us an annual insurance of 30 days cover for "free" (account charges are 12 quid a month).
This can be extended and the cost depends on your health statement - we are around 60 with Type 2 diabetes and cost for 160 days was 240 quid for us both for a year.

Thanks junglejim we are looking for annual insurance with multi trips each trip more than 90days per trip, I have found some insurances allow 100days per trip
but have a limit as to the number of days per year. Its so we can go back and forth when we like and when flights are reasonable for us pensioners lol

Hi B@ G,

The EHIC cover ,if you have an accident or suddenly become ill then you’ll receive the necessary medical health care for at reduced cost.

The EHIC does NOT cover: All your medical costs especially private treatment.... I do agree with "mike" that private medical insurance is a good idea if you live permanently on the island.
