JOSÉ L. CONDE | Arona
More than 2,500 kilos of food have been robbed from a Red Cross station in Arona, this centre was until the end of last year a imigration centre. The food was destined for families in need in the county. José Luis Camisón, coordinator for the ONG in Arona expressed his anger for this theft which punishes not the charity but the people who live in the neighbourhood, who were whom the food was destined for.
Camisón explained thet the Red Cross centre had 4000 KG of food from the European Fund Social Food Bank, which was the last delivery they received for the year.
The Red Cross decided to leave the food in the centre which up to last year was a centre for immigrants, and which had a security door as it had been attatcked twice in the past, with furniture destroyed.
Bars cut
Once the food had been deposited, the theives came on Sunday night and proceeded to cut the bars on a small window on the side wall and stole all they could. The robbery was not discovered until Tuesday afternoon as the offices were shut. It was discovered by José Luis Camisón, who then went to make a police report with the Civil Guard. But, again on Wednesday night , the thieves returned for more food, but, it seems they couldn't manage everything as they left several boxes, which the folowing morining were moved to another more secure location.

The indignation of the Red Cross coordinator was obvious when he said "you don't rob from the charity, you rob from people who most need help, who are going through difficult times", perhaps their own neighbours. What is for sure is that five tˇmes in the last year this building has been broken into. The building is in the area of Vento. Latest news is that, yesterday afternoon, two young men were taken to the Civil Guard station as they had been found inside the centre by Red Cross staff.
Alarm
This has caused the Red Cross to look at installing an alarm, especially as this centre is about to be reopened to give courses and workshops to people who are interested.
Apart from the food stolen there has been damage to the doors in the storage area where they looked to steal the food and other materials that were interesting. Unfortunately, in cases like this the victims are the people who are most in need.
