I was removing a couple of unwanted programs from my spare lap top and noticed my Iobit uninstaller has a section for deleting/uninstalling updates? I have absolutely loads of these and wonder if they might be slowing my lappy down? is it safe to get rid of really old ones? Which ones should I not uninstall or delete? Thanks to anyone who can help!

Depending which operating system your are using with windows 7 you can use disc cleanup and tick to remove system pack backup files.

as for uninstalling installed updates I would leave alone as they are installed to help secure or fix problems with the operating system.

Thanks Mark! I use disc clean up (from my control panel) every day to get rid of clutter etc... The system is XP and there are loads of windows updates which I thought I might be able to get rid of! I'll leave alone then! I also cannot use IE I think a friend of mine installed something to do with it that I can now not reverse but IE will never load? any ideas on that one? Gotcha!!!

Windows 7 stores the files much differently than xp so no you cannot do the same thing but there is this

There is a little unknown command with disk cleaner to enable it to remove a lot more old/junk files than usual, just create a shortcut using this command.

%SystemRoot%\System32\Cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & Cleanmgr /sagerun:65535

or go to command promt (might need to run as admin) and type Cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & Cleanmgr /sagerun:65535

You can tick them all but if you use crap cleaner I don't think it will make much difference

I don't think so Faraway! a defrag puts files in order (like books in a library) A disc wipe of free space removes fragments that are left! Mark I'm sure will let us know for sure! Don't take it from a divvy like me!

Do you use a cleaner like CCleaner? which have the facility to clean/wipe a disc...it takes a bit of time to complete though!

No, never even heard of CCleaner although if it takes a long time, then its probably too much for my impatient brain! Would like to know how to do the disc wipe though.

be very careful you dont select the the whole drive!!!!! here is it what that option does http://www.piriform.com/docs/ccleaner/using-ccleaner/wiping-free-disk-space I wouldnt bother to be honest its always good to have an option to get your deleted files back!!

As suggested by every one you can use the disc clean up if using windows 7 and if not then you can use the regular process of installation which is default in your system that would not at all harm your system as they are old updates.

I do a wipe of free space Mark because my laptop has such high use! so I try to keep clutter to a minimum if I can...I hope I'm doing the right thing!

I have used 'Crap Cleaner' for years and as you say it completely clears everything which is why I only use it for default cache cleaning.

Brilliant tool for that as there are no worries.

To use it's other services you have to be very careful as there is no back up.

Having said that I use it every day.
