OK

The Trade Unions have called a general strike for Thursday 29th. By definition a General Strike is one where all workers have been called to not work.

As always, there will be exceptions, some bus drivers, some teachers, some airport workers, some taxi drivers and some shop workers will not strike whereas others will.

There is no way to tell how many will, nor how many will not strike.

The only sensible advice is to be prepared for disruption, be prepared for bus services to be reduced, maybe cancelled. Be prepared for there to be less taxi cabs on the streets, be prepared for some teachers to strike and therefore some schools to be closed, be prepared for some shops to be closed and be prepared for some Government offices to be closed.

whilst i agree with the right to strike, history has shown it really makes little difference except annoy the people whose life's are disrupted and the loss of a days pay.

I beg to differ. Without the Trade Union movement we'd all still be cap doffers and forelock pullers..

My grandparents, on both sides, were in 'service'

'ADDED AFTER 1 MINUTE'

My mother in law was, too.

I have been told there is to be a general Strike in Spain and the Canary Islands this Thursday (29th) I haven't managed to find out if this is true or not? We have friends leaving on Thursday and other friends arriving so have been warned that flights will be disrupted. Any Info about this would be appreciated!

Yes there is a General Strike but it is voluntary so nobody knows what services will be affected. I have to go San Miguel for a Blood test and they have said you could be in for a longer wait as they don't know how many staff will be on strike.

Poor You Primrose! can you not change your appointment? from what I hear striking will be widespread throughout public services.

It all seems a bit hit and miss understand some of the Air Controllers belong to one of the unions. Also people have been visting bars asking them to support the strike and shut on the day. There was also poeple on the big Los Cris roundabout passing out leaflets yesterday.

It looks like we will all have to wait and see.

Last week our local hospital rang to change OH's appointment from tomorrow to Thursday! We only found out about the strike on Friday or we would have queried what they were arranging. It's for a six-month check-up for his diabetes and, although he doesn't want to spend all day waiting, we don't know how long it will take to get another appointment. It is a bit odd though to reschedule for a strike day ... unless they've done that for everyone, which wouldn't surprise me.

We'll have to take our kindles, Suej, yours to the airport and mine to the hospital.

The last strike didn't get much support over here, someone told me they were 'too poor to strike' - I assume they get docked a day's pay?

Not a lot happened with the last strike! around the time of the Ash cloud if I remember rightly! Who knows what support the strikers will muster up! we'll have to wait and see. Yes it is the same strike Leam Lin as the other General strike thread.

Personally I dont think there will be any more support for this one than the last although more people are peeved about the changes now as it affects thier " rights"!
A large supplier of ours has told thier employees that they can work inside the building , stocking etc , taking orseds etc but for thier safety they will not be allowed to deliver. This business , as have many others been told that they/thier staff will be attacked if they work.
Apparently this time they are going to target Industrial areas such as Las Chafiras , Guimar,Los Majuleos etc.Again we will have to wait and see what happens.Even those who may agree with the reasons for the strike can probably not afford to loose a days pay.

It must be better supported than we are led to believe.

I just took my daughter over to Golf del Sur, as I do most days, and the roads are quieter than they are on Sundays.

Even the chaotic Las Chafiras roundabout was deserted.

Went for my Blood Test this morning and we were all told they would be taking the Blood but there was no guarantee that it would be tested as they didn't know how many were working at Mahon where they tested it, and if it wasn't done you would have to back to your Doctor to make another appointment, so it's just a case of wait and see.
