I was round at some friend's yesterday, and they were showing me their electric piano. And now, of course, I really really want one. I remembered that I had forgotten that one of my retirement plans was to relearn the piano. I'm not sure I can afford upward of €1,000 first off. Has anyone got a keyboard - what are they like, which one(s) would you recommend.

I am confused  ... do you want an electric piano or a keyboard?

IMHO for an electric piano it has to be Yamaha.

Keyboards are a different matter. Personally, I have a Yamaha Tyros and love it, but it is a matter of personal choice here.

Your budget won't stretch to a Tyros, but Mr Google should help in comparing facilities available on different manufacturers and models - then it is just a matter of which features you want and the sound that is produced

Thanks, Mike. I only want to play it in the house so I'm not bothered about it being easy to transport about the place, etc. The one I saw had features which allowed you to play as piano, organ, spinet, etc. and add orchestras. I have dreamt about something like that ever since a curator in a museum bravely let me play the spinet in there one day. I'm going back about 50 years here - wouldn't happen today.

I'll have a look at the Yamahas. I played the piano as a child but have forgotten everything so will have to relearn - hopefully it will be like getting back on a bicycle.

I think I'll have to try and find one with an 'earphones' option for the sake of OH's sanity.

This isn't the best rendition of this song ... I do it much better and more funky :cheeky:

but it does demonstate the mixture of piano sounds and orchestral stuff on a keyboard ...

:pray: I can play like that one day! Looks like the flight deck of a 747, Mike. I think I'll have to set my sights and budget a lot lower initially. :(

The controls on the Tyros look complicated but it is very straight forward. Check out the new Yamaha Piaggero range. They are really good prices Here (http://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical-instruments/keyboards/digitalkeyboards/dk_-_piaggero/?mode=series)
It is just like getting back on a bike,by the way.

Thanks so much for the tip. Just checked and nearest Yamaha distributor is in Tenerife. Still we can get everything shipped from Tenerife at a price. Glad to hear the long-forgotten skills might resurface, thanks for the encouragement.

Many apologies for bumping my own thread (rapped knuckles).

I have found a shop locally which can order Yamahas but they say they have a Yamaha P95-S in their almacen. It must be a big storeroom because it is taking them from Wednesday to Monday to dig it out. The guy says I can go and try it out on Monday. I looked it up online and it looks brilliant. Any thoughts anyone?

I have the P70 which is an older model.I have heard the P95 and it is really good.It comes with an optional stand which is very nice and makes it look like a piece of furniture,or you could always opt for a cheapo x stand, which will cost between 25 and 70 euro.It has a recorder for recording your own pieces of music. Here it is on the Thomann music web page. Here (http://www.thomann.de/es/yamaha_p95_b.htm).The optional L85 stand is Here (http://www.thomann.de/es/yamaha_l85_schwarz.htm).
Its listed on Thomanns at 538 euro and the stand is 98 Euro. It might be worth your while mentioning that you checked out the price there as they might give you a bit more off whatever they quote you as Thomnann do deliver to the Canaries.Happy playing. :)

I forgot to mention the 95 S is silver but you can also get it in black.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the information. I am going to give it a test run on Monday morning. I had a bit of a look at the prices on the internet and the original price he quoted me is a bit high but no point in worrying about that until I've decided I want it.

You are very welcome. The thing about the prices out here are they are generally more expensive,as you have to factor in transport costs and less competition.I tend to buy all my gear here, because if I have a problem,I just need to go back to the shop.Having said all that,I have never needed to get something repaired under guarantee.
Out of curiosity, how much were you quoted?

Thanks so much for the links, Mike. Especially the demo! I think it's exactly what I want.

irishmusico - thanks so much for all your help. He's talking a price range of €500-€650. I would imagine it will depend on the stand, etc. The great thing about it is that it is HERE and so there won't be all those unexpected hidden extras we always encounter when we order things on line.
