Hi,

I am looking for a shop that can liaise in English for unlimited data and straight Mobile to UK T-mobile calls, (Sim only plans).

I have been informed by a Telecoms specialist that the Delfin sim for 9 Euros would suit me best with a 3.50 Euros a week unlimited data plan.

I have an unlocked HTC Desire that I currently use to tether to my laptop in the UK or to use the HTC to wifi Hotspot from also. Unfortunately I couldn't ascertain if I need a dongle in addition, as my telecoms expert is available by chat only and it is difficult to keep discussion on track whilst he multi-tasks, although he tried his best. He did advise I would probably be better to purchase in store as I was looking for greater clarification than his website was able to offer me., but if anyone can advise I would like to give this individual my business as he did persevere, but need clarification on the points below.

Do I need a dongle for 29 Euros when I can presently tether my 'phone with a sim only option?. If I don't need a dongle is a delfin sim card on its own sufficient for data and voice or do I need anything else?

I understand Orange also do a monthly unlimited option for 35 Euros how does this fit in with the options above?

All help appreciated. And obviously help with the shop point if you can't advise on "to dongle or not to Dongle" that is the the question!

As I mentioned above, I need unlimited data which is not capped. Unfortunately I have subsequently found out from another 'phone sim site, that the Orange Delfin Sim is up to 3.6 Mbps for the first 100 Mb Once passed, than it will slow down access to 128 kbps. So no skype video calls when that occurs?

Oranges Internet anywhwere dongle allows 250 mb per day then it too is capped @ 128-64K So again no skype video calling??

Does anyone know of any unlimited no cap offering or at least a 10 GB mobile Internet per month via mobile sim?

If I was paranoid, I would question my previous telecom expert on why he did not have this information clearly on his website?
It might go some way as to why he didn't want to explore further the limitations of the solution on offer, when pressed? But hey, that may just be my paranoia.Or is it??????

Anyway if no solution found, will just have to hang around Wifi cafes and drink lots of coffee or whatever the alternative offerings are on the Los cristianos areas for wifi access, as I haven't arrived yet to establish the norm.

Thank you

By way of update, arrived last night.
Woke up to my first day in beautiful sunny Tenerife. Popped to Costa Adeje to collect my debit card from Lloyds. All straight forward. Going to pick up NIE tomorrow am.

On the mobile internet front was surprised no one came forward with suggestions. So here is what I have further gleaned that may help others.
Vodafone offer a similar mobile internet offering to Orange's internet anywhere but if you want sim only option at 35 Euros per month...you can only get 1GB option to start with an option to get 2GB for further 35 Euros. So you can not get the 2GB option to start, whether you go for sim only or dongle! What a rip off!!. Once the 1GB is used you purchase a further 2GB for 35 Euros in the same month. so 70 Euros for the first 3GB on initially getting sim/dongle!!!!!

Movistar offer a 5 GB per month for 40 Euros than capped to 128 KBS. 6 Euros per month for national voice calls at 6 cents per minute for land or mobile. Think it was 15 cents to connect from memory. This is a contract but no minimum length and can be cancelled in 48 hours by going in to Movistar and giving written confirmation for terminating contract with no further notice. Need NIE number and spanish bank account to set up direct debit. This seems my best bet as I will be able to make voice calls using Skype/Viber and free texts using What App using the data element. you also get 250 minutes free national calls at week ends. The way I see it it would appear Movistar being a Telefonica company have the monopoly on Teneriffe regardless so unless anyone can offer a better solution will go for this. The Orange Internet Anywhere at 35 Euros just isn't competitive at just 2GB and with a "no minimum commitment contract" from movistar they get my vote.

ive been looking into all this for a customer and im just going to give up and tell people to get fixed line ADSL at €20 a month for up to 6mb ....

did find HITS bono 1gb a month €17

http://www.hitsmobile.es/en/web/guest/home

(hits piggyback on the vodaphone network)

Thanks Satellite but for me as I am not in permanent private residence yet, it is not a viable option on the ADSL option. But once I have that sorted will touch base to see if you can assist , (which I already know the answer to will be yes). The HITS option at 1gb for 17 Euros makes the movistar option of 5gb for 40 Euros appear very good value as it appears the hits option is no different to the Orange price point save 1 euro?

Thanks Satellite for the heads up on the other plans.

You are correct on the movistar offering it is a monthly direct debit contract but with no minimum requirement, so can be cancelled within 48. hours.

The simyo offering is only available via the web and that goes for their support too as they have no shops. This would concern a new arrivee like myself with limited spanish.

On the yoigo front, although a fantastic deal for 10 gb @ 35 euros, it is a requirement that you provide a water or telephone payment made by proof of a statement or ATM slip providing evidence that payment has been made out of your bank account before they can proceed. So unfortunately being a new arrivee that too is beyond me even though I have a nie/passport/spanish bank account. So it looks like I will have to proceed with movistar, get a my first charging period deducted from my bank account, get ATM proof of payment and then provide that to yoigo rep to get my 10 gb deal.
So much bureaucracy but that is the delights of discovering a new culture and just fitting in. I'm the foreigner after all.

Thanks again Satellite.

my mate has one of their shops - no problem with basic paperwork but maybe for the future as shop in the SPANISH part of tenerife ...60km from you

I assume your mate's shop is yoigo?

An update on the Movistar contract that you can cancel without penalty......Unfortunately, as I have only had a NIE for a couple of days. They want £300 Euros before they can issue me a contract for a 5gb monthly contract sim. OK....So how long do you need this for?....6 months... And if I cancel after one month to get yoigo sim how long before I get deposit back? 6 months!

OK back to Orange. Can you supply sim only card on internet anywhere contract at 39 Euros per month?
" Er not sure , Normally you need a Dongle."
But I have an un locked phone that I can use as a dongle.
"Have to call head office....."
90 minutes later. Any news?
" They called but unsure, will call me back soon........."

60 Minutes later. Any news?
"Yes, I can't supply the sim only, you need to purchase a dongle too"
But I don't need one, I have a 'phone that I can tether to my PC/Tablet.
"Sorry, can't supply one without the other"

OK. Let's try Vodaphone.

They can supply 10 GB on non permanent contract 10 GB for 45 Euros. No need to purchase a dongle.

Great !

Here's my NIE that I got yesterday......

"Sorry we need the green one...That one is a temporary one that expires in 90 days"

Solution.

Got Lebara sim with 10 Euro credit and go to a bar with wifi that drops every 2 minutes. Welcome to Tenerife! YEEHAH!

Will this get me down? No way. It will all come good in the end. Breathe slow and deep. Look at the sky, marvel at the weather and the beauty of the island and repeat. "This is the beginning of my wonderful journey in a paradise setting and I am lucky for the opportunity" Breathe out......

Hi Guys, Great posts. Lots of info, just what I needed. Hope all worked out in the end for hip-hop. Im also in same boat & just wondered if anything had changed, i.e what would be my best option for unlimited data plan (or close to unlimited) As these posts are a little old. Oh by the way, I too will be a newbie, so hopefully wont have to jump through tooo many hoops to get a contract. Thanks in advance.
