You get infected through browsing bad websites - gambling, porn etc so make sure you aren't doing that :)

Then install this program: www.malwarebytes.org
Run a scan and it will probably pick up a load of malware and adware that you can block and delete.
If you are using Internet explorer - switch to Firefox.- You can then install an add on to stop pop ups regardless of which sites you are visiting.
Another thing to note. if you get odd looking messages from your contacts with links in them - dont click them. Your friends may have had their hotmail accounts hacked and then they are used to send these malicious emails which take you to "drive by" attack sites which install all-sorts of crap on your system.

See how that goes and if its still happening post again as there are quite a few good programs that will deal with this for you.

I use Bitdefender Internet Security, the last time I tried installing malwarebytes ii seemed that it was not compatible with the Bitdefender! I might try again but do you know if this is common with some Anti-Virus programs?:)

Hi Sue

That's quite common for security products.

My friend has the same problem with VirginMedia's security product (BitDefender based) and Malwarebytes but it only seems to be a problem if you run them at the same time; if you install MalwareBytes but don't set it to run all the time and only use it manually it seems to be OK.

ESET runs quite happily with Malwarebytes but complains if you are using Norton !!

Thanks Bob! I have a feeling we have had this conversation before! I'll install it again and just use it when I want to! :)

dede! Did you look to see if there was an Add-on in Chrome that will disable pop-ups? I would think you have already looked though!:dontknow:

Hi Dede

Did you run the full check via Malwarebytes rather than the short one? When I've done a full check it's taken overnight to complete. I use Firefox and occasionally Chrome and don't get any pop ups.

Hope you can get it sorted as it drives you to distraction as you say.

Quite possible. My son moved into an apartment as a lodger a few months ago and was surprised at how slow his connection was.

When he investigated he found most of their connection was hijacked.

He soon sorted it.

I don't see the point in using Chrome when IE9 is so good, so I can't confirm that this works. A Google search turned up: go into your control panel, internet options, privacy, check or uncheck "turn on pop up blocker"
