When I visit Tenerife I love to go up into the hills and see the hunting dogs working.

Do any forum members own a hunting dog ??

I breed English Springer Spaniels and love to work my dogs in the UK.

My girl is due to pup next week and I am looking forward to training my new puppy.

For all the dog lovers I breed for the working lines and not the money.

Yes I have a podenco called Lucky and he is 6 years old.He is however not a working dog - but a dog of leisure who loves his comfort!!!

There are so many Podenco's looking for their forever home! If you would love to own one then why not visit Live Arico or K9 or whatever other place with loads of dogs looking for a new home! Even better start a trend, maybe you can get more people interested in adopting one and bringing them back to UK after the holiday.... Just a thought

Good idea! I only got Lucky my podenco because he was thrown out of a car window outside my house, and I rescued him and his brother ( who unfortunately we had to have put to sleep because of his injuries) from the road. they were only 5 weeks old, and weighed 1 kg - now my strapping boy is a healthy 62kg, and very happy!!!!

62kg? Whoa!!! Did not realize they grew that heavy! We have one American Bulldog from almost 2 years old who weight around 45kg and a cross breed from Live Arico (probably a Staffy cross we needed something strong to stand the Bulldog) But she weighs about 27kg I think now. How tall is your Lucky?

DOREEN QUINN

not ever measured him, but hes tall. can easily put his head on any dining table, although I dont let him!! He's solid, typical build with large chest and nipped at the back, but I must admit perhaps he is a bit more rounded than he should be!!!!

Added after 2 minutes:

Actually I think he's a bit of a cross, but not sure with what, perhaps a giraffe! although all his vet's papers say he is a podenco!

He was a 'lucky' dog Doreen :) I went up into the mountains up North for a day last time I was over and a Podenco, either lost or dumped, was running down the road in distress. It upset me for the rest of the day as I wasn't able to park the car and try and catch him. When we have trips around Teide I always hope I'm not going to come across any of them as I know that's another place where hunters like to dump the dogs they no longer want. :( I saw several of these dogs cramped in a cage at the back of Palm Mar out in the heat, whilst the hunters were sitting enjoying a nice meal!! Not a nice sight.

I agree GFG he was lucky, hence his name, we see many escaped ones around here, horribly thin, and mis treated and it hurts to see them, but cannot keep them all, many hunters actually shoot them if they dont catch the required rabbits, which seems so cruel but perhaps better than starving to death or getting run over, which I think was the intemtion of the person who dumped Lucky.
They do seem crammed into trucks, all standing together - but thats what they seem used to - funnily enough Lucky NEVER sits, he stands or lays down, must be in the breeding.

Pondencos are lovely similar to greyhounds - they too don't sit because of their bone structure. You are right the ones that are shot are better off. They do unimanageable things to them when they are no longer required similar to the greyhounds/hunting dogs in Europe.

It would be fantastic if a craze could be started for the Pondenco. Owning a greyhound has really taken off in the UK, but still thousands are destroyed every year as they don't make the grade for racing. :( Often thrown from cars or other ways.

We have a Podenco, her name is Bailey and she is 3 years old. We took her in after the lad across the road found her abandoned along with her brother and sister at just 3 weeks old. Like Doreen's dog she is not a worker but she does like to 'hunt' random things like handbags and chew them up lol. We also have a Jack Russell and even though the Podenco could swallow him in one mouthful he is the boss and she knows it.

One of the refuges that my wife volunteers at seems to have specialised in them, the refuge owner loves them. That's not to say she hasn't got other breeds there but there are certainly more Podencos. We both love them as well, they are a very elegant breed and loving too. We will undoubtedly rehome one in the future, we'll have to wait a few years until our current pack of 5 forevers and one foster dog gets smaller. If anyone is interested in rehoming a Podenco or feels like helping at the refuge please PM me and I'll send you details.

She is beautiful Jackie - is that her lovely soft bed? Are they similar to greyhounds who are couch potatoes most of the time?

haha GFG no that was my daughters lovely soft bed, she has now been banned from going upstairs :). GFG with her there is no real in between, she is either curled up in her bed asleep or running round like a crazy dog, she loves going for a run up the mountains and she needs it because she has so much energy. She doesn't realise how big and heavy she is, often copies the Jack Russell when he jumps on your lap lol

Lucky is the same Jackie, runs around loike a lunatic when out- except last week when we came face to face witha very large horse! he wasnt impressed and walked home clung to my legs! The rest of the time he sleeps very happily on my mums bed! All in all he is a very happy, contented and very loyal dog, although he loves to bark at anyone passing his house, saying stay away!!!

We re homed a beautiful Podenco to the UK a couple of years back.
They are descendants of Pharaoh Hounds and truly are wonderful dogs given half a chance.

The hunters will tell you that they cannot be pets that they lack something that enables them to adapt to family life but I know this to be rubbish.

On our last trip back to the UK May 2011 we visited Zuri in her new home and we went for a walk with her in the park what we saw we couldn't believe she played amazingly her recall was perfect and her house training impeccable.

There is a Podenco training finca in Charco del Pino and the hunter that owns it is famed for his training facilities and care he gives his animals.

This was a video made by my wife that led to both dogs finding a home Zuri is the smaller brown dog.
