A Bulgarian man who smuggled almost 80,000 cigarettes through five UK airports, including Stansted, has appeared in court, Cambridge News reported.
Teodor Tsonchev pleaded guilty to evading nearly GBP 17,000 in duty and VAT following an HM Revenue & Customs investigation.
He was given a 20-week jail term, suspended for one year, by Bournemouth magistrates.
The 32-year-old was intercepted five times smuggling cigarettes from Tenerife, where he had family. On December 13, 2008, he was stopped with 13,000 cigarettes in his baggage at Stansted Airport – evading GBP 2,725 in duty and VAT

So he actually hasn't really received any punishment, as the sentence was suspended.

He was stopped 5 times, how many other trips did he make and not get stopped? He obviously does it for a living, so a suspended sentence is no deterrent at all.

5 Trips or 500 Trips, 1,400 or 14,000 Cigarettes, Bulgarian or Spanish or British Citizen, Doesn't really matter, the culprits are the British Goverment and their Taxes. They deserve the punishment, and not a suspended sentence.

How on earth did he manage to carry thirteen thousand cigarettes in his luggage? In cartons of 200 that would be sixty five packs, or if he split the cartons he would have six hundred and fifty packs. Must have been a big suitcase!
