They have failed to win their opening match in all seven previous European Championships (Drew 3, Lost 4). They have lost the last two - 3-2 v Portugal in 2000 and 2-1 v France in 2004.

Stunning stuff. But there doesn't seem as much pressure on us or expectation, im going for a 2-2 draw!

2 weeks back I gave them no chance, now I have a feeling it could be a good year. It reminds me a lot of 1990 when we had a lot of injuries but the players raised their game. Fingers crossed I'm going for a 2-1 win for Engaland.

I think England are lot better than people think.
Their goalkeeper and back four are the best in the tournament...and two of the best midfielders in the world in Gerrard and Lampard.
I think England 2 v 0.

as I said last week there is something here:) The whole squad look happy and together, the best player coming back in fresh, players like Walcott and Chamberlain ready to take on players and Carrol could be unplayable for some teams. Not saying we will win the thing but we are a lot better than I thought. Nice to see RH jumping about when we scored, We've missed that passion for years now. So far 7/10 with hopefully more to come.

I am Scottish, live in Scotland, proud to call myself British, married to an English girl & always support England when they are playing (unless they are playing Scotland)
That's not that often as there has been no tournament for Scotland since 1998!

Quite sad really. A publican seeing the need to end up name calling. Just shows how often people stoop to the level of those they are so quick to criticise.
As for England,s performance well you had beeter get the maximum enjoyment out of the results to date 'cause I really, honestly cannot see this team progressing any further. The were unable to keep any shape when under pressure, 4 & 5 players all trying to tackle the same opposition player, for example. I was led to understand that under this manager they would be difficult to beat well I don,t think performances to date support that view. What is wrong with Joe Hart? He seems indecisive and I rate him the best in the world (Buffon still no.1?). In the first game he was all over the place in the first quarter, not commanding his area at all. He will have to get better if you are to proceed. Gerrard and Parker have not yet got into a routine of coming and going, back to front. Both seem to be opting for the same movement. Cole has been disappointing as one of the best in the world (that,s 2 now) but is it because he is covering up elsewhere and not being allowed to take responsibility? Young should just be given a ticket home. That,s how much use he,s been. I,ll be disappointed if big Carroll don,t start next game (he,ll be even more so). He,s done more than enough to keep his place.
Someone on here made reference to the team "being to-gether" at this stage. Sorry but I have to disagree. Seems to me that there are cliques (?) (in football?) developing with some of the young, black players and their older pals. Hope I am wrong but I certainly saw signs last night. On the up side. They have got 2 results, which, in other circumstances, might have been different. Bit of spirit and I,m really pleased for Walcott. Great player when up for it but drifts out of games in the past. Well, now is the hour, young man. Step up as I think you,ll start next game up. Not a great fan of John Terry (the person) but cannot deny his attitude and ability in any strip. I was therefor surprised at how easily England got punished down the middle. He will have to take on more responsibility as Gerrard is not dominant enough to be captain now. Terry is and should be.
So, who,s next, presuming qualification? Spain is it (I,ve not looked to see future fixtures). Now that is gonna need real improvement in a lot of areas. I shall address that nearer to the time (if I have time).
Now guys, go about your normal business, and stop making it so obvious how petty you can be!

golf birdie
16-06-2012, 15:05
the big difference is when Scots and Welsh sit in their little corners praying for whoever happens to be playing England to win. I find it very sad. Maybe we are miles from being contenders but where does that leave Wales and Scotland:) I will enjoy the games as they come as before the contest started I would of been over the moon with these two results.

We have played France and did enough to get a point.
Last night we showed that even being behind we had enough to go and win and get the 3 points.
You can only take one game at a time and see where we go from that but so far so good.

YG for all the many posts that you have made, this is the only one that I take issue with.

Yes England won and the result was a fair one, but nearly every written word in today's papers point to the fact that England played poorly and unless they can raise their skill levels in playing as a team, unfortunately I don't think they deserve to go further in this competition.

I gave up reading the rags years ago, they will forever slag England off. It will be worse now that their man never got the job. What makes them experts:confused:

As for deserve:confused: You get what you deserve by where you finish. Russia started this championship with a 4 - 1 win, some were saying they were dark horses to win it, went out last night, the team they beat won the group. Some teams start slow and get better with every game like Italy 82, England 90. Spain made 800 passes the other night against the worst side by far, so what:confused: Italy showed they are playable if you have the game plan plus remember they passed England off the park a year back and we still beat them.

England have their best player back this week so lets see how this will change the way we play, I think it will make a huge difference as IMO he is the best player in Europe in his position.

Well, hard work at times but we won the group and we could not of done better than that.

Gerrard has really stepped up for this, he looks like the player he was 7 years back. Maybe its the armband or having most of the season off. Terry was immense, solid as rock. If a few others start playing better who knows what could happen Need to hold the ball more and sort out the short range passing.

Also noticed Rooney mouthing the National Anthem, never seen this before, Maybe RH has made it a condition of playing, Should of happened years ago IMO.

Seems like Blatter thinks now it has to happen

FIFA president Sepp Blatter on Twitter, regarding goal-line technology (GLT): "After last night's match ‪GLT‬ is no longer an alternative but a necessity."

Funny how for once its gone Englands way and now it has to happen

AJ McGillivary on Twitter: "After the Ghost Goal, apparently Sepp Blatter has offered to stand behind England's goal with his iphone against Italy."

It would not surprise me if he did.

It really *****s me off the way you brag about beating the Scots, Welsh and Irish! Your population is at least 10 (TEN) times bigger than any of them, you SHOULD beat us every time. What's amazing is the odd occasion when one of the wee nations beat you. It's like boasting that you're 15 stones and managed to beat seven colours of s**t out of a 8 stone boxer! Then you wonder why some supporters of the other nations don't support you. :nono:

we were an absolute disgrace from a football perspective - defence tried hard and deserve appreciation - but some of our so called creative world class players need to have a long hard look at themselves in the mirror (mr rooney top of the list) - it was an embarrassment and a relief that we do not need to watch them anymore - heaven knows what germany would have done..

Have been following the story too.
You may have noticed that due to my psychic awareness, I changed my avatar from an England Flag before the team's expected defeat on penalties.
I also placed 6 bets on Paddy Power and won £20! Having 5 bet stakes returned
Shortly after that I went to Sports Division to buy a new Spain Flag....as the garage mice scoffed my old one........
Thought England were really poor and agree with some that Rooney should not have played in any of the matches.....Woy woy woy. Goodbye.
Shall we try and just have a penalty shoot out in next year's England V Scotland clash.....I hear the Scot's boss already has the lads practicing.....I expect Levein to play a 1-10 formation.

.....Woy woy woy. Goodbye.
Why?
Why would Roy have to go? I thought he did really well.
He got a mediocre, second tier team of technically proficient but completely talentless and unimaginative over-paid pompous goons into the quarter finals. He did brilliantly.

England are not in the same league as the four semi-finalists and shouldn't be there .... they did well to get out of the group.

Greece and Denmark have won the European cup more often than England ..... we've never even made the final.
I blame the television.

My opinion for what it's worth is England played to their capabilities! they looked poor and slow against the Italians and Rooney did not look match fit! Now that was a good match.
Italy 2 - Germany with a lucky consolation penalty - Germany played well but they were out played. Zis is not ze vay ... ve wil get them with ze banks Ha.
Rooney wouldn't even have played if he were Italian.
Italy will probably beat Spain too, because Del Bosque seems intent on playing without forwards ..... lots of tick tack passes and no goals ..... (except of course, against Ireland)
Llorente sitting on the bench!!! .... what is he playing at?

Why do Italy always end up pulling it out of the bag?
Because they're one of those teams that get more and more passionate as the tournament proceeds.
But so do England ..... so what's the difference?

The difference - The England team are totally devoid of talent and creativity, the last player we had with even a spark of talent was Paul Gascoyne.
Rooney and Gerard !!! They just looked embarrassed to be there - "Oh dear ... we've got to do this by ourselves .... oh the pressure!". The only thing they are good at is taking the celebrity limelight for the exploits of their more talented imported players. The English players are the ones playing in the championship league.
The England national team play like Greece ..... they are not at all in the same league as Spain, Germany or France. Why?

What is the difference?
The difference is that Italy is a healthy society - they eat well - they love their mothers - and their children play football in the streets.

..i don,t see England doing anything than being 5th.. ?.. best in europe..? where in the world our position in the world rankings is I wouldn,t like to guess at ...

Safety first tactic's of "Lets not get beat" instead of "Lets go and win" I also agree about the Italian way of life etc! Also education, some England player's struggle to put a sentence together and are embarrassing in interviews!Player's like Milner,Henderson Parker etc should be nowhere near the International scene! I also don't like the tactic of protecting the back 4! If they need protecting they shouldn't be there in the first place!

I would tend to agree.

None of the England players can expect much interest from the club managers watching, which is how most players promote themselves.

All these major competitions tend to be showcases, but this time the case was never really opened.

The Premier league is regarded by most as the best league in the world but all it has proved to be, apart from making a lot of young men rich, is a training ground for foreign players.

Does nothing for the England national game.
