I think forums could be a thing of the pass very soon.....what with Facebook Twitter and other sites nowadays being really popular.
The reason i say this(as a example) people used to post items for sale on here but not so much these days...yet i joined a facebook page here in Tenerife today people wanting to sell things and there are around 3,000 members already.
Whats your thoughts on this?
Is this example just the start of change.

Forums are definitely less popular than they were say 10 years ago because of the rise of social media , however I don't think they're obsolete just yet, with twitter you can't be very detailed in your convos and points with other people.

On Facebook you can generally only interact with friends and friends of friends unless you're a member of a group - the groups are usually pretty specific "flog it" ... "wanted..." etc.

The Tenerife forums still have a place because anyone can join in the chat, there's a variety of topics and sections (not just selling or wanted)..... So I think this format has some legs yet.

I'm fine here - with all the drivel and duvets !:D

My personal preference is for "open id" communities rather than the username model. One of the biggest issues with forums is that the anonymity makes them a breeding ground for cyber bullies, cyber stalkers, trolls etc
Whilst on Facebook people can set up fake accounts, its very easy to see that that is what they have been done and with 2 clicks they are deleted and banned.

Facebook still has its fair share of the same problems that forums do but its not as easy for the cowards to hide and skulk around - firing off insults or faking reviews of businesses and all the rest of the tat you get on the internet!

Google also seem to prefer this model with the recent upgrade and expansion of there own network which places much more emphasis on an individual and their connections. LinkedIn is similar where you are asked to provide references for work history etc so in general only "real" people have any credibility on such networks. Forums are still stuck in the past and the anonymity they provide in this day and age is very much a double edged sword.

There will always be room for an informative , friendly forum devoid of sarcasm or ridicule. Anyone know of any??:)

They don't exist seanocelt! that's Forums warts and all! :) There is always one or two on any Forum that lie in wait hoping for an opportunity to pounce with some sarcastic comment! which we all know is the lowest form of wit! X

Twitter = Gossip and slander.
Facebook - Never used it (Seems to me to be a place where people talk about themselves and how well they're doing)
Forums = Information, opinion and a bit of banter.

Only 1 winner for me.

To be honest wouldn't be without FB or the Forum,,, FB keep in contact so easily with family and friends around the world..more importantly my boys in UK, they don't even phone me now, they message me on FB when they will be on Skype lol...Forum still a bit of banter and any questions you have will be answered......simples....sorry Kirsty lol ;)

Nah things go through cycles IMHO. I've seen times when Facebook slows up and the forum gets busier and vice versa.

I actually hate FB. I,ve always thought of it just a chat sort of place, family friends etc. Twitter I prefer, if I could get my head round it and actually use it. Much more general information and if required can go down the friends road. Forums, well there are some that seem to go from strength to strength (football sites in particular) and others, like here, which seem to be falling on difficult times.

Good idea and the easy solution is for forums to use Facebook or linked in profiles to log in

Nice to see some positive posts! often when threads like this are started it just seems to attract negative posts and I wonder why the people bother if they really think it is all rubbish! As Jackie says there's a bit of banter and you can get help or advice within minutes of posting and lots of helpful information on Tenerife what more can you ask for?!!! :respect:

This forum is, to me, just the same as my Facebook special interest groups - a pleasant place to chat with people I've never met about shared interests, so definitely not "past it". But this is also special because I can only get out to Tenerife about once a year and it's lovely to be able to "connect" with islanders in between times.

But not all our forum members have FB or Linked-In accounts. So would you exclude them? A while back a brave soul started a thread with the intention of 'outing' members who had more than one ID on here but, although some were identified, I seem to recollect it fell by the wayside. I'm in a different situation since I don't live on Tenerife and have only met one or two Forum members. But I have made several real friends on here and we email and chat privately about all sorts of things and I am very grateful to the Forum for that. For me, FB would not provide the same. I don't care for it much particularly when people (in my own family!) post about their problems which I don't like to see aired in public!

I know a few members would like the Forum to be more like Facebook but to my mind that is the joy.

They are totally different entities and always will be.

For me these are all quite different.

The Forum was probably the most essential source of information a few years back when lots of new buildings were attracting people to Tenerife and through many queries and getting to know those on the same complex, people made many lasting friends, virtual and to meet. Now there is a mountain of specialist information on all aspects of Tenerife to which people can refer and through accessing this Forum people are still having fun, banter and make friends. This huge resource cannot be replaced for some years and, as it is forever updating itself ,there is no point in trying to start it up elsewhere.

While the football was on TV a couple of nights ago I was chatting on FB with a friend in Florida, one in Sweden, one in the UK and one in Tenerife and we were all commenting on the game. Fantastic to do that across the world. I use my FB to show things I think are interesting, beautiful or funny in photos for people to enjoy or comment upon but not involving myself, although I express general opinions. I delete people who swear on my FB page for any reason. It's a thrill to befriend so many of this Forum on FB but we are careful to use it positively.

I tweet for fun on any general news issue or about our garden and seem to have a lot of oddball Americans following me! It's very nice of them but I haven't a clue why. They seem to be a very soul-searching nation and take us so seriously. There is a big difference in humour. I follow tweets from NASA. Mind-blowing!

To sum up I can't see why one would replace the other...they are all so very different.

I think in general forums are slowly getting used less and less due to Facebook, Twitter etd, its a shame but thats life. I like them....

The problem, I believe, is the fact that a lot of people that join Fora, who have never been on one before, is that they expect a giant chat room.

There are parts of Fora that are for this but mainly they are organized in such a way that the most important threads are those with information.

This Forum, to me, is so well organized (some call it over moderated) but info, chat, advertising, problems etc. etc. are so well sorted as to make it easy to navigate.

I would hate to see the basic structure change because one or two members want a Tenerife Facebook.

Long live Fora and all who sail in them...
