An impromptu pet cemetery which has sprung up on some waste ground at Costa del Silencio is causing local inhabitants concern for public health issues.
Veterinarian Valeria Candia confirmed to RTV Canarian television that animal remains must be cremated by law, and there is a facility for that at El Sauzal.
Valeria went on “once the remains start decomposing there is a real danger that the water table can become contaminated, that is why the law requires cremation”
Those living near the site are split in their opinions, some think that beloved pets should have this place to lie in peace, while others express concern over hygiene issues.
The Arona council say they have no record of the unofficial cemetery and are now investigating.
