Collecting bottle caps for charity in Tenerife

Looking for verification on this one.............

My wife is collecting plastic bottle top lids for a friend (Who is a member of 'The Swallows').
Apparently it is to raise funds to pay for an operation for a little girl over here to go away for an operation.

Does anyone have any more information on this, or is it just another time wasting stunt ???

there are quite a few places doing this, a girl at our local gym collects them too, and OH said there are some people at the airport that are collecting too, but for differing charities/aide, unfortunately you have to collect one HELLUVA lot of plastic bottle tops for it to be worth it.... shame really.

We are collecting them at work, and we get rather a lot of them. If you do want lots, we could probably collect for you too ?

They collected them at school i. Las Galletas also for this girl.
In the secretary halway there is a collection box with the newspaper article from the girl.

Thanks for the replies folks. We do not want to become a collection point, but now we are sure it isn't a waste of time, my OH will continue to do her bit.
