My wife and i are moving to Tenerife on 1st October.

My wife takes medication for high blood pressure and also medication for a stomach problem.

Does anybody know how she will get these tablets when we are living there?

You could try giving the names of the drugs on here as others might be on the same medication as your wife! Most drugs are available here although they might have different trade names. You could also try Googling the name of the drug to see what the equivalents are here.

Thanks SueJ

When I left the UK ion 2005 I was taking the most commonly prescribed medicine in the USA and UK (for high blood pressure). And at that stage it had not been approved for use in Spain and I had to change to a different medicine altogether. I don't mean it just had a different name or was made by a different company, it is .. to some extent ... a different way of treating the problem.

Can you find the generic medicinal name of your wife's medicine on the packet? The medicine I am taking is described on my prescription as "delapril hidrocloruro 30mg - manidipino 10mg" so that's available here!!

tbh. I think there are a few approved here in Spain as I take Olmetec from time to time!:-

I notice from another thread that you will be over in September to sort things out! You could take your wife's tablets into a Pharmarica and ask their advice!

Sorry! I didn't mean to give the impression there was only one approved drug! I'm sure there are loads. Just a question of finding the right one.

The Farmacia next to Dr Whittaker in the Arona Gran Hotel is good at translating medication.
A lot more is available over the counter without prescription here that it is in the UK.
Alternatively, see Dr Whittaker and she should be able to help, although you will need to pay for a consulation with her.

I take medication for thyroid and was surprised when we got here that I could buy it over the counter at 2.64 euros for three months supply.

Good luck

I know it's fairly easy to but over the counter drugs here, but anyone who self diagnosises is looking for trouble.

If you know what you want, and has been 'prescribed' by a doctor in another country then OK.

If not then a visit is recommended.

I came over here in 2000, taking over 12 different types of drugs.

Everyone I was able to get, albeit the Spanish Named Equivelent.

Dont worry, Spain has Fantastic Pharmacies, and what they dont stock they
order from Santa Cruz / next day delivery.

Yes most drugs u can buy over the counter, or if u get a prescription by registering
with a Social Doctor, you will get 40/50% off price.

I would recommend that yr wife either pays private medical insurance, or Social here, to make
sure she is covered for any hospital visits, although alot go home for treatment ..........

Hope this Helps

Tell me about Social and roughly how much would you be looking at for private medical insurance? Would we get that from the UK or Tenerife?

Thanks a lot guys for all your advice by the way

When I came here in 2000, I MADE sure that was covered for all my medical needs,
because I have a serious medical condition.
I had a transplant in 2000, and that comes with lots of Hospital visits and Drugs.

I RESEARCHED the amount would have to pay, social wise, no point to Private u are not
covered for pre existing conditions, to my mind, waste of money for me.

So I pay the Social every month by direct debit, I warn u now its not cheap, it goes on
yr age etc, but u are looking at over 200 euros p/m around approx 220.

This gives me my medication, of over 1000 euros p/m, of which I pay a percentage.
This gives me my medical care over here, I have to have regular blood tests and consults in
Santa Cruz.
Since I have been here, now have a heart specialist in Mahone, too, all covered.

With myself, yes I had a specialist in the UK, but would mean flying home every 3 months.

In yr case, u may choose, just to buy yr drugs over counter, and not bother with the social,
and instead take out annual travel insurance, also which does not cover pre existing conditions.
But if u have a specialist in the UK, poss would be cheaper for u to fly over when u need a check up.

Its abit of a grey area, as everyone is different, with their different needs.
If yr wife does not need to be monitored to much, then would keep yr link to the UK.
However she could go and see the English Doctor here in LC Karen Whitaker, who I cannot
speak highly enough of, and she can monitor yr BP and Stomach Condition, she charges only
30 euros consult charge, one off fee, very worth it.

SO those are all yr options, if u need any further assistance or advice I am on my computer
every day ........

Its easy when you know how, its hard when u are feeling yr way into the DARK !!!!!!!!!!!

Thankyou Pets@home for your advice.

My wife has slight high blood pressure and takes a mild dose of tablet so buying over the counter would be enough she is only 43 also. She gets her BP checked by her doc and as we are planning to go back to England twice a year she could get a check up then so not a problem.

The only thing we need is medical insurance. You mention annual Travel Insurance. I thought you were not covered if you stayed in a country for more than a month? Or am i mistaken?

We also have up to date European Health Insurance Cards. What exactly do they cover us for?

Hi yes u guessed I only come out at night ..........

Right, the whole Travel Insurance thing is not something I can use for myself as would cost me almost 300 pounds for just one trip. Now I carry a EHIC card for when I am in the UK, and when I am here my social card covers me here.

Your could do the other way round, have an EHIC card, which covers u for "emergencies" only and will not cover pre existing illness, apart from Dialysis, hence the reason I use it for the UK.
The EHIC card is only for holiday makers, and really does not cover residents, but alot do use it and are treated.

Travel Insurance again, like Private Medical Care, does not cover pre existing illness.

My opinion, use Karen Whitaker here for anything u need to know or checkups, and fly home if
something develops which is serious.

Alot cannot afford Social care or Private Medical Insurance, and go home for treatment instead, keeping their link in the UK open.
Also the other reason for doing this, is the language barrier, which exists here, albeit I have always got round it.

Come initally for say 3 months, take out Travel Insurance for 3 months stay, and suss the place out and see for yourself what yr wife requires ................... at least she will be covered for other medical conditions then ...............

I came here in 2000, had a Kidney Transplant 6 months prior, if I can do all that, with all my medical history, which I took with me, and manage to find a specialist etc, anyone can do it ...........

I have put on my tin hat.

I know it is perfectly possible and perfectly legal to be resident in more than one country.

However, pulling my tin hat right down over my ears now, I didn't think it was possible to use the National Health Systems in both Spain and the UK as residents. Perhaps 'possible' is the wrong word. Perhaps it is 'possible'. But not altogether correct. I know people do this because they have properties in both countries and there doesn't appear to be any way for the governments to check.

This hasn't got much to do with the original post and apologies for raising the issue.

I hope your move to Tenerife goes smoothly . If you need any advice on insurance related matters we are here to help.

Specifically, if you PM me with your ages I can give you details of Private Medical Insurance and the EXCLUSIVE DKV Health Policies we have on offer.
