The Tenerife Business Federation, Fedeco, together with all the south’s business associations were inSanta Cruzrecently, where they presented their campaign against the proposed huge shopping centre planned for Adeje. Attending was Luis de Miguel, President of Fedeco, accompanied by representatives from business associations in the south of the island to support the initiative to gain as many signatures as possible on a planned petition.

“The new hypermarket will mean a drag on the economy because we believe that the benefits are not invested here,” said Luis de Miguel, “The market share that Canarian companies might receive is about 30%.”

Jordi Esplugas, President of the Adeje Business Association, (AECPA) and vice president of Fedeco, said, “While it is true that jobs would be created with the arrival of this business park in Adeje, it is also true that three or four times as many would be lost because so many smaller companies would have to close.”

Esplugas claims the proposal is ‘illegal’, in terms of zoning and that opens up the possibility of Fedeco taking legal action. He said that the land is currently zoned for tourism use and would have to be reclassified, depriving the south of a possible new, major park, which, he said, would significantly improve leisure facilities and services essential to the tourism sector, the engine of the Islands’ economy.

All of the opposing groups say they trust that the Government of Adeje will listen to the outcry against the project and be sensitive to the approaches of the thousands of people affected. Already, just a week into the campaign, they have collected nearly 5,000 signatures, from employers and employees who see their futures in jeopardy.

They have also created an online platform, with the idea of collecting the largest number of signatures to support this initiative.

Those wishing to support the petition against the proposed hypermarket can do so online at www.empresariosdeadeje.com and www.fedeco.org • Federation of Commerce of Tenerife (FEDECO)
