CANARY Islands Deputy Minister for Tourism, Ricardo Fernandez de la Puente Armas, alongside Director General for Tourism Infrastructure Miguel Cabrera, and the Mayor of Arona, Jose Alberto Gonzalez Reveron, were present at the recent inauguration of the Parque Central de Arona, ‘Los Morros’, a work that has been carried out in two phases and with a budget of 1,337,977 euros.

The objective of this project has been the implementation of the first two phases of a landscaped urban park with leisure facilities and playgrounds in Los Cristianos, in themunicipalityofArona. The playing surface is about 21,690 metres square.

Ricardo Fernandez de la Puente Armas expressed his satisfaction that the residents of this area can now have, “An outdoor space designed primarily for leisure and free time.” He emphasised, moreover, the concern of the Canary Islands Government to work on the recovery of public spaces in tourist zones in order to maintain and improve competitiveness as a holiday destination.

In this sense, it also complies with the Competitiveness and Islands Tourism Quality 2008-2020 Agreement, signed in January 2008, which states, “The Canary Islands Government makes a commitment to adopt a series of actions carried out in coordination with public and private institutions in the field of renovation and rehabilitation”.

The Mayor of Arona, Jose Alberto Gonzalez Reveron, said, “The opening of this park is about a new recreational centre for tourists and locals, as it is located at a strategic point between Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas, with both hotels and residential complexes”.

However, the Arona Council, “Is wrong again,” according to the Los Cristianos Neighbourhood Association, who consider it unnecessary.

“The Los Morros urban park, near the courts of thePalaceofJustice, had been intended for other purposes,” they say.

“There are enough parks scattered in different areas of Los Cristianos and Playa de lassAmericas,” said a spokesperson.

“Part of the nearly 22 thousand square meters occupied by the new park should have been earmarked for construction of the long-awaited health centre, since the one we have is obsolete and outdated from decades ago”, residents say.

“It is sad and reprehensible that they have squandered nearly 1.4 million as we continue without a primary care health complex. Investment should have been destined for a work that would answer the demands of the local neighbourhood,” the

Association claims.

In addition, the residents say, “Because of the extent of the plot it would have been possible to build a local police station to meet demands.

“However, the government of Gonzalez Reveron, instead of fighting to give a boost to the thousands of families who reside here, prefers to support actions that are not necessary”, expressed outraged members of the neighbourhood association.

“In addition, the new park is located away from residential areas, so it is not the most appropriate place to have built a complex of its kind” notes the group. “The resort has many urban parks but their maintenance is very poor. The logical thing would have been to improve what is already in place”
