The Cabinet is expected to approve a decree by mid-September on urgent measures to alleviate the damage to those affected by the recent fires. In his appearance in Congress, Minister Arias Cañete said that the aid will be similar to that provided in 2009 and its approval will provide additional support to autonomous regions, in order to mitigate the damage to people and property and restore the affected areas.

Meanwhile, Arias Cañete has estimated that around 181,000 hectares have burned inSpainso far this year. The Minister, who appeared at the request of the Izquierda Plural, Grupo Mixto and UPyD in the lower House, has made an estimate by adding together the perimeters obtained from aerial photographs in the fire control centres and data sent by the regions.

Arias Cañete said, “So far this year the support required from the Ministry has been above average compared to recent years, with the government already acting in 405 fires. The greatest impact has been in Castilla y León, where there were 375 interventions,Galicia, with 238 interventions, andValencia, with 170 interventions. In all, we have provided assistance on 1,747 occasions, with 5,661 hours flying and 27,883 water drops”.

He refers to the actions that took place in the great fires in Valencia, Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha in the last days of June and early July, and the work undertaken in early August on the fires here in the Canary Islands, including those at Villa del Mazo in La Palma, Alajeró in La Gomera and El Tanque in Tenerife
