Tenerife Tourism has just launched an initiative on volcanoes and their benefits, a drive which aims to encourage tourism professionals, “To introduce volcanoes to visitors and make them more appetising and interesting as part ofTenerife’s resources”. Island Councillor for Tourism, Carlos Alonso, said that the volcano is “one of the great tourist attractions.” Tenerife Tourism will carry out this training programme in collaboration with scientists at the Volcanological Institute of theCanary Islands(Involcan) and the Technological Institute of Renewable Energy, (ITER) to impart theoretical and practical knowledge about the volcanoes, existing measures on reducing volcanic risk, and especially on the use of all the benefits, from the tourism point of view.

The first of five classifications will start the training sessions, which will be conducted in the Municipalities of Garachico, Los Silos, Buenavista and Santiago del Teide, coinciding with the first of the volcanic areas that were developed, from ancient volcanoes, and is aimed at all companies that are taking part in the new tourism product, ‘Tenerife, Volcanoes of Life’ or any others who would like to join. Hotels, restaurants, tourism companies and public facilities are some of the members of this programme.

Tenerife Tourism has been working on ‘Tenerife, Volcanoes of Life’ since 2009. Since then, after a joint effort developed with business and local groups from Tenerife, they have managed to design a full range of five major volcanic areas in which the island has been classified and where tourists can learn more about volcanic manifestations present inTenerife.

The other four volcanic territories created, and that between them cover the whole of the island, are Gigantic Landslides,LandofHistoric Volcanoes, Abeque Ridge and Explosive Volcanoes. For each one, Tenerife Tourism will develop training sessions for the corresponding areas on theIsland.

The potential and the attraction of volcanicTenerifeare unique in the world, bringing together most of the existing volcanic processes. It houses the world’s third highest volcanic cone and has over one hundred craters andBadlands, (arid lava surfaces eroded by time).

In addition, under the surface is a network of huge volcanic tubes formed by the cooling of the outer layers of lava during its progress, such as the Cueva del Viento, in Icod, which at 17 miles long is the longest inEuropeand fifth in the world.

In practice, the initiative ‘Tenerife, Volcanoes of Life’ is aimed at tourists seeking an authentic holiday experience.

“This can be done while enjoying other activities, such as sampling our food and wine, impregnated with volcanic character, or practicing activities such as scuba diving, where the seabed is so affected by volcanic properties or walk on trails where you learn more about lava flows, or Paragliding from cones and appreciate from great heights the most impressive geological formations of the Atlantic,” pointed out Carlos Alonso.

‘Tenerife, Volcanoes of Life’ is part of the Competitiveness Plan ‘Canary Islands, a Volcanic Experience,’ involving the Cabildos of Tenerife, La Gomera, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, as well as the Central Government and the archipelago’s hotel associations
