I go down most mornings or evenings with a buddy to Amarilla Bay and do some snorkelling & freediving.
I'm an ex track athlete / Long distance runner just turned 50yrs old. I started snorkelling a few months ago but now Im also getting in to what they call freediving. Take one breath and dive as deep as you can!
It's keeping me fit too. If you fancy coming along making friends and joining me in exploring the 'deep blue' for free then just PM me. You will need to have your own snorkel and mask and a pair of fins. Im not running a business! This is purely an invite to have fun and socialise. I also go off to other great snorkelling sites on the coast.

Just be careful that there can be rip tides in that particular area, more so if you go a little way out. Not so much noticable below the water, but on the surface. Can take a lot more surface finning to reach a suitable exit point if caught in one.

Other half found a strong current at the end of Montaña Pelada (Medano) today, and he's been doing pesca submarina for yonks, but had never tried up that way, he ended up leaning on his big float and taking a leasurely swim back to shore after that episode - mind you, he was more miffed before (ooops typo.. because) it was all sandy sea bed, so not a lot to see/catch ... now he knows why there weren't any others fishing about there :swimming:

Montaña Roja is the same. You would think looking at it that it would disappear underwater into the depths, but it doesn't.
It's like someone put it there.. on top of a sandy base. Nothing but a sandy bottom everywhere. The Tejita side is OK for some snorkelling (you can do it nude :-) ), but for anything else... very disappointing.

Always careful out there. Always with a buddy and use a float with anchor. Always close to shore too. Always one down and one up. My buddy is an experience diver. Amarilla bay is a great place for swimmers and divers.

WANTED: ‘Freediving Buddy’
My names Dave I live on the Golf del Sur and my sport, passion and leisure activity is the extreme sport of ‘Freediving. I’m looking for what we call a ‘Buddy’ to freedive with me. We will dive as friends, share a fantastic sporting experience, and explore the coastal ocean around the island. Freediving can be dangerous and you should always dive with a friend (buddy). To go on my own means I cannot push myself too deep or for too long, and cannot progress. Let me tell you that this activity is amazing. You step in to another world and you come out of the water feeling amazing. What is Freediving some of you ask? Its take, one deep breathe and swim underwater. I couldn’t hold my breath for more than 45’seconds 5 months ago and swim less than 2meters deep. My best is now 2 minute breath hold and 20 meters deep. Safety is important and this I can teach you. I will share my knowledge and secrets on how to freedive. If you’re a freediver, scuba diver or a great swimmer and would like to start freediving then PM me. Please beware this is an extreme sport with dangers and you need to be a good swimmer and be in good health. But if like me you follow the safety rules then it can be safe. It’s a great keep fit sport too! I will share my knowledge and experience so you can enjoy this extreme sport.

Want to see what freediving is all about then here is a link to a video of me freediving. http://youtu.be/tcjZalIsnD4

Great video Dave

It isn’t that hard to do. Most of it is to do with relaxation. Being in the right frame of mine. Not stressed or physically tired. You cannot be a person that panics. Safety aspect of it is important and that’s the hardest to do but most of that is down to common sense.
You know you get a message from the brain telling you to open your move and breath? Well you can go beyond that point. You still have plenty of oxygen left. That message is telling you that you have a build up of CO2 in your system that’s all. This is the hardest bit. You can train to push that message to warn you a bit later on. When we have the urge to breath we also get stomach contractions and a gulping feeling. You can train to cope with this, get through it. When I go through contractions I can slow them down make them fade away. This is where you have to stay calm and relaxed. However they do come back and stronger and then it’s time for me to come up. All this gives you more minutes. Mind over matter. The more you practice holding your breath the longer you’ll be able to hold it. When you get to the point you want to breathe start thinking of something nice or in your head think of song lyrics. You will be surprised how much time you can add on by doing this. Try it. Im just uploading a video I shot today in Los Abrigos. I filmed some sealife there. I'll put link up later.

Aha, so all the bigger fish hang out on the bottom then. Probably explains why all I ever catch are puffer fish, angels and other assorted tiddlers. Once caught a side plate sized one and took it home to cook but then felt sorry for it and couldnt eat it. Too soft I am......Lovely videos Dave.
