AT a special sitting of the Arona Town Council, 12 Coalicion Canaria, (CC,) Councillors and two from Centro de Arona, (the Mayor was absent,) approved the declaration of compatibility for Jose Alberto Gonzalez Reveron to continue serving in public office as Mayor of Arona. The PSOE, PP and CxA were absent.

Therefore, the CC Mayor remains in place even though he has been sentenced to four and a half years of disqualification; even though the city clerk reported that the Mayor should be dismissed and even though the Central Electoral Board considered that his dismissal is required by law.

To counter this, the municipal government (formed by the CC with an absolute majority,) commissioned two reports. One, by a professor of constitutional law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and another from lawyer, Rolando Rodriguez.

The two experts concluded that Reveron’s dismissal is, “the exclusive competence of the Criminal Court that issued it. He was convicted in Criminal Court, not by a political party so no political party can force him to go until the courts enforce the judgement.”

The Mayor was convicted of the illegal recruitment of two women workers at the Town Hall and has appealed the decision. Gonzalez Reveron said the aim of the meeting was to, “end the situation of unrest, uncertainty and doubt and to roundly settle this and put an end to it”
