Me and my partner are looking to move to Tenerife next year around the June/July time. I’m 25 and work in the finance sector (I have qualifications in finance) but also have years of experience of working in Marketing. My partner has just recently graduated from University after studying fashion and now works blogging and website building for a clothing company.

I’m just after a bit of info on which Part of Tenerife would suit us most opposed to the others as I said before we are a young friendly couple, we like to get out and about/see things and do activities we have diverse interests and do not know which place would be best suited? We will be flying over early next year hopefully to have a look around and make a decision. I need to know if there are more job opportunites in one place then another, are there any british communities on the islands, what is the cost of living, if we both did end up getting a job, can you live of the wage… Although we are qualified in certain areas we would take pretty much anything available if it covered our cost of living.

Also, we will be looking for work. Would you suggest we try and sort a job out before we fly over? When we come over we will have enough money to support ourselves and rent a property for a good few months and was planning to hopefully find work in that time. From what I can gather I believe South Tenerife would be the better option than the north?

Just a bit of general guidance really on the different areas of Southern Tenerife so I can research certain ones a bit more. I’ve tried to keep this brief but if there are any questions you would like to ask us then fire away :-)

Any feedback would be much appreciated

Thanks guys,
Brad & Anna

Have you read through all the existing threads in this section from people with similar questions? That would be a good start :) All this stuff has been covered multiple times on here.

Please do not expect to get a job using your specialised skillset unless you speak Spanish. You will be lucky to start out working for a minimum wage in a bar. Sorry if that's not what you want to hear, but it's pretty much the reality as Tenerife has one of the highest unemployment rates in Spain right now.

Hello, i will have aread through the other threads too, i was hoping for a bit of interaction so my specific answers could be answered. Working in a bar is absolutely fine, i was letting people know my current work etc just to give a bit of info about myself. I wouldn't expect to walk straight in to a similar role. Restaurant, bar work, hotel work would be ample. Is this work available all year round?

Thanks
Brad

You need to be living in the South of the island and jobs wise - look at doing your own thing. Otherwise naff jobs on naff salaries with little or no rights is what youŽll end up with!
There isnt a financial services industry here - I came over looking for the same thing - quite shocked by the reality all those years ago!
So I set up my own business in mortgages and have now diversified into property.

If you could build up an online client base for marketing to the point where you wouldn't be relying on the local economy then it would be a great place to be based. But you need to be diversified away from the people living here and the businesses operating here as they ainŽt spending anything.

Good advice Kirst! particularly the advice about speaking the language. But as regards the unemployment such a shame for such a beautiful country & island to be in!

The unemployment rate in mainland Spain is less than here, so the prospects are slightly better. Although I guess that these questions are posted on a predominately English language forum as the posters generally do not speak Spanish. If you do not consider Valencia or Malaga, for example, as a place you would try because of the language, then very soon Tenerife will not be for you.
The job prospects here, are poor. If English is your only language, it is becoming less and less. The British market is becoming less as the area diversifies like never before. It is getting to be more important to speak English and any other language, in the tourist area, and with the influx of people from other parts of Europe and especially, the previous eastern European countries, they have the edge. Generally, their expectations are less and are willing to work for whatever is available just to get a foothold.
The recent arrivals I have met, speak English to a reasonable standard and often, another language like German, Italian or French in addition to their native language. Many immediately enrol in the Language school to learn Spanish as quickly as possible as they seem determined to make a real go of settling here. Just recently, Belgians & Hungarians particularly.
Contrast this to the Brits who arrived, determined to integrate, learn the language and the customs, who immediately installed British TV, bought UK papers and think hola and cafe con leche is as fluent as they will ever be. This is fine for those that do not need to work, but..........?
It seems that, if you have a trade or skill and need to rely on British ex-pats or tourists here to survive, you are 5 to 10 years too late, as there seems to be more than enough Brits here already, to cover the diminishing number of vacancies.
If you are serious, then learn another language before you get here and my suggestion might be.............Russian.
