MORE than 1,500 people turned out to honour the fallen at various venues and churches on Remembrance Sunday ceremonies in South Tenerife.

The biggest congregation was, as always, atWesthavenBay, Costa del Silencio, where people from many nationalities, including some American visitors, attended the Royal British Legion’s annual service.

Among the guests was Tenerife Cabildo President Ricardo Melchior who, along with everyone present, observed the traditional Two-Minute Silence.

British Legion Poppy Appeal organiser Kelly said: “During the silence, it was noticed by many people that there were no planes going overhead, no cars driving past, nobody moving chairs and no children playing.

“The Silence was just that! People just seemed to be remembering those from the past, and those who had passed away this year.

“They were remembering soldiers, old and young, who had fought so that we might have the freedom to live our lives as we would like.”

Last year’s Poppy Appeal inTeneriferaised 11,694.97 euros and, when this year’s collection has been gathered in and counted, the overall figure will be made known by the British Legion.

Kelly added: “We thank everyone for their continuing support of the association.”
