I am now scanning twice a day to remove the 'pup' problem on my laptop. I remove it, then it's back again in the next scan.

Any suggestions please as I'm sure this is what is causing my laptop to repeatedly 'not respond'?

Some google searches bring options
for example
I was looking in my downloads folder and saw a prog called DG.exe with a icon. I didnt remember what it was and thinking it might be another virus scanner i d/l for a previous problem I opened it. I then got a red flag from Mcafee saying it was generic pup virus.
I deleted it from directory and trash bin. Ran Mcafee again full scan and it comes up clean.
Purely accidental but Im happy with it. I don't like the fact that mcafee does not point out the file name that is infected.
Thank you for helping me with advise on this matter. Happy ending!!

If you know roughly when the problem started you can check in Control panel what programs were downloaded and see if you can recognise the programme and delete it.

Oops, perhaps the threads can be merged, please.

Tried everything, but nothing gets rid of it!

try the free nod32 virus scanner http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

http://guides.yoosecurity.com/how-to-get-rid-of-pup-bprotector-virus-manual-removal-guide/

you can also try this download http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=7978&file=15&evp=50f0f0b55012ecaf96a22dc710ada2d0 its for zero access but might fix the issue

you can also try malwarebytes new anti-rootkit http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/mbar/

I think it's time for professional help as nothing is working, some if it is too technical for me to understand. I tried a system restore back to September, but that didn't work either!

Thanks everyone
