IT’S going to make one heck of a sandwich, and it has already made history – in the Guinness Book of Records.

Fran Alonso, a Maestro Cortadore (master cutter) fromGalicia, who is based inTenerife, produced a slice of ham measuring an astonishing 30.11 metres (99ft) and weighing 4.5 kilos (10lbs).

It walloped the previous longest slice, set by Spaniard Nico Jimenez, of Extremadura, who upped his own record to 13.35m inTokyoin 2010.

Alonso recorded his success last Thursday in Plaza Charco, the main square in Puerto de la Cruz, watched by crowds of fascinated well-wishers throughout the day.

It took him seven hours of careful cutting to stride into the Guinness Book of Records after his marathon feat. The challenge was sponsored by local restaurateurs and Puerto de la Cruz Town Hall.

Previous record holder, Jimenez is the most famous of the 10 Spanish Maestro Cortadores and has cut Iberico ham for Spanish royalty and tennis superstar Rafael Nadal.

He also prepared a ham dish for the victorious Spanish World Cup football team on their arrival back in Spain from the competition in South Africa
