A STUDY by business school ESCP Europe has revealed that only 20% of .

job vacancies inSpainare advertised.

The rest, it says, are being filled by existing staff – or their contacts outside work.

It means that 80% of vacancies are taken up before they are even advertised, and companies are using their own databases to cut the cost of recruitment, selection and head-hunters.

And researchers ESCP maintains that this practice is contributing to the economic crisis and high unemployment rate.

Word of mouth plays an important part in filling vacancies, perhaps more so than the traditional problem of “contacts” or “favours”.

The business school says that nowadays, people are more likely to send their CVs to firms on spec, whether or not there is a vacancy.

Ramón Aragón, ESCP’s department manager, stresses: “Now, more than ever, it is crucial to keep on the move and build contacts with active professionals, who can give you hints and tips about new job offers.

“The concept of networking is very significant for past bosses and colleagues to bear you in mind when they hear of jobs, since they know best how you work.”
