TENERIFE is to be promoted to the world as the perfect geo-strategic point to invest, according to an announcement presenting the new campaign, ‘Why Tenerife?’

The initiative is designed to inform foreign businesses of the geographical and economic advantages here on the Island and the Cabildo has joined the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce, the Port Authority and the Zona Especial Canaria (ZEC) to release the same message: to convey the benefits of working in Tenerife and its usefulness as a platform for financial exchange between Europe, Africa and America.

‘Why Tenerife?’ was presented by representatives of the four major organisations, who explained that the initiative aims to attract new investors linked not only to the world of transport, but also tourism, commerce, industry and new technologies.

The Cabildo’s head of Economy, Competitiveness, Mobility and Tourism, Carlos Alonso said thatTenerifeis not only economically attractive because of its geographical position, but also by its new emerging sectors, such as information technology and communications. In fact, he said the Cabildo has already driven projects that unite the island with other continents. One example of many is the submarine cable system connecting Tenerife with markets in Europe, Africa andAmerica.

Carlos Alonso also highlighted the creation of theNAP(Neutral Access Point), a centre that will bring together most submarine cables on the island and become the main focus of the entire telecommunications system.

Similarly, the vice president of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation of Santa Cruz, Modesto Campos, pointed out that the Island serves as a bridge between the three continents, not only because of its location but also for the quality of its infrastructure, ports and airports, as well as the organisational capacity of institutions and professionals, the existence of centres of innovation and the presence of more than 90 Tenerife based companies in Africa or Latin America.

To be effective, Campos said, the groups have made two commitments: first, to combine the efforts of the Cabildo, the Chamber of Commerce, the Port Authority and the ZEC to coordinate strategies so the Island “is stronger and, on the other hand, continue working on Tenerife to make sure it has a more competitive economy, with the sacrifices and decisions that are necessary for this purpose”.

He acknowledged, “This is a very difficult economic situation that is affecting the survival of many businesses but we are also aware, as entrepreneurs, that our only way out is to look outside and attract businesses here to work with us”.

The chairman of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Pedro Rodriguez Zaragoza, said the port’s infrastructure should be very appealing to foreign investors, citing the modern facilities that make the capital’s harbour “a perfect place in theAtlantic”.

His counterpart in the ZEC, Beatriz Barrera, warned that with the current budget cuts, “It is more important than ever that the Canarian institutions, whose responsibility abroad is to promote the benefits of the Archipelago, are coordinated and pool their efforts too”
