View Full Version : How does loss of hearing affect your life?

I woke up Monday morning, very early and as I got out of bed I began to stagger all over the place. Blimey, I thought, I didn't have that much to drink the night before. I kind of fell into the bathroom and used the facilities, immediately after which my stomach started wretching, but nothing came up. Back to bed and more wretching and nothing!

My wife thought I had the Noro virus, as we'd been out a couple of days earlier with someone who may (or may not) have had it. I decided I'd stay in bed. Fortunately, I had no stomach upset at all.

Later I got up and was still a little dizzy, but less so than earlier. My hearing had gone in one ear. In the late afternoon I saw the doc who told me I had an inner ear problem and really just had to wait.

It's Tuesday afternoon and I've had a headache ever since and still no hearing in one ear, though what I perceived as swelling in the affected ear seems to have gone.

I met a neighbour this morning and we said Hi, but then I realised he'd also been saying more that I could not hear.

I hope this thing passes quickly, but I was think how bad it must be to lose one's hearing, or to suffer tinnitus. It's only been a day or two and and I feel bad enough!

Sounds like you may be suffering from Labyrinthitis.
If it persists Balcony, go back to your doctor.

I have no medical training but your symptoms remind me exactly of an experience I had once with one of my sons-in-law who has Meniere's Syndrome (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001721/). We were out as a family here in Tenerife doing some shopping when he suddenly became violently nauseous and dizzy. He had had this many times before in his life and knew what it was. He described it as an inner ear disability which affected his balance and hearing, called Meniere's Syndrome.

Anyway do get an update from the doctor in case your inner ear problem is this ailment.

Check the symptoms on the link I added. Good Luck with this.

Sounds a bit like Vertigo which is NOT a fear of heights as some people think, but an ilness to do with the inner ear. I had it a few years ago. It gives you a sensation of the room spinning around you and makes you sick. I was prescribed Stemetil tablets and it settled down eventually.
Hope you get sorted soon. :)

Dear Balcony

Hope you get your problems sorted out. When I saw the title of the thread i assumed you meant permanent hearing loss which is probably different from your current illness.

And the answer in my case is Yes It Does Affect My Whole Life! Especially watching television because the sounds just come out as a jumble and turning the sound up just makes the jumble louder. Have been to the specialist twice now and each time he's told me that the problem is that I haven't got enough air in my head. OH just can't believe that is the conclusion he reached.

The tinnitus is quite bad, too, particularly after a journey in car, train, plane ....

Good luck with the doctor.

I'm not long over that - took just under 2 months to go. I didn't have a severe case but it was a pain nevertheless. Going up and downstairs, turning round quickly - horrible. I didn't go near my car - even crossing the road was a major event !

I feel for you

I had labyrinthitis once and it was frightening. Just suddenly came on me and I found myself on the floor with the room going round and round. Doc confirmed labyrinthitis and gave tablets. Cleared up very quickly but thought I was having a stroke to start with. Good luck and hope you are better soon.

The doc says.....wait.

It's been 6 days only, but oddest 6 days. Walked to the newsagent this morning. For the most part fine, but now and then it was like being the morning drunk! As Malteser says its OK looking forward, but when you turn the head to look at something...wobble, wobble!

It's the lack of hearing one side that is awful. How do people who are fully deaf get by? Opens up your thoughts for people who lose their senses.
