AS the dispute over unpaid wages between lifeguards and the company that provides them for Arona’s beaches continues, rumours that users are at risk abound.

However, according to a member of the Arona Council’s press department, the matter is in hand. Canarian Weekly was told that members of the Local Police Beach Patrol are present on beaches such as Las Vistas, in Los Cristianos and all other beaches that would normally have lifeguards. These officers are specially trained to deal with any situations that may arise, until a solution is found and the lifeguards return.

The Town Council has, according to the press office, no responsibility for the wages that have been unpaid since August, stating that it had paid the company contracted to provide the staff and it was their duty to use the money to pay workers.

Meetings have been held during the past week or so in an effort to resolve the situation and it has been decided that the Council will employ a new service.

A further meeting is due to be held next week to settle the matter and award a new licence for the service.
