A number of Adeje Town Council’s departments, including Health and Education, are the driving forces behind a new project that falls under Education for Health called ‘Healthy Breakfast’, in collaboration with primary schools, which intends to promote the habit of a healthy and balanced diet in order to improve student’s school performance and also encourage physical activity.

Department of Education Councillor, Andres Perez Ramos explained, “Some students may be going to school or to sports activities without having had breakfast, with just a drink.

“We want to show that a correct and balanced diet is the most important choice that people can make to have a positive effect on their medium to long term health.

“In this sense, children are among the most vulnerable groups in terms of nutrition, and we want to teach the habit of eating healthily, because it is the best guarantee for the prevention of the most prevalent chronic diseases in society”.

The Councillor explained that this project will involve three phases. The first is the collection of data, which means a preliminary examination of the nutritional problems existing in all primary schools in theAdejeMunicipality.

Perez Ramos said that, from the information obtained, the second phase of this project will be designed, with educational content to be developed in the classroom or

through complementary activities: educational material will be provided to parents with general healthy and balanced food recommendations that will also be launched at various educational workshops, to promote healthy eating and the need for children to practise physical activity, and finally, there will be story and drawing competitions based on healthy eating and the dangers of junk food.

Upon completion of the project, Adeje’s Mayor said some assessments will be made with the objective of improving future editions. This will be done with the collaboration of students together with their parents and teachers. This would be the third and final phase.

Andrés Pérez Ramos notes that the objectives of this project are clear: to promote the development of healthy eating patterns and physical activity in children; to encourage families in the development of healthy eating habits and create healthy schools.

He adds that it is important that, for this project to fully develop its objectives, collaboration with the Adeje Health Centre is essential, in the coordination and guidance of health education, as well as the involvement of health personnel promoting good food and healthy living.

The project should kick off in February 2013 in all schools in themunicipalityofAdeje, and is intended for students from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle of Primary Education and the student’s teachers and parents.

The Canary Islands hasSpain’s highest rate of child and adolescent obesity. New lifestyles have led to significant changes and have especially affected the habit of eating breakfast.

Lack of time, Ramos Perez explains, “Has led us to consider breakfast as a meal we can do without. Many children go to school or other activities without having eaten breakfast. However, breakfast is an important meal because it provides the energy needed to face each morning’s activities, including a day at school”
