THE average time for a patient waiting to undergo surgery in one of the ten public hospitals in the Canary Islands has gone up to 213 days, or seven months, as confirmed by the Canarian Government’s Ministry of Health in response to a question from PP Member of Parliament Mercedes Roldós.

Specifically, the Department of Health stated that the latest available data on the average delay to surgery here inTenerifeshows the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria with a wait of 142 days and the Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC) at 122 days.

Just a week ago the Minister of Health, Bridget Mendoza, announced in Parliament that ordinary surgical activity scheduled for the first half of this year increased by 9.5 per cent, due to Day Surgery, which recorded an increase of 20 per cent.

“The surgical waiting list is increasing, as in most Spanish regions, due to lower funding resulting from the forced reduction of public spending imposed by the Government of Spain in their budgets,” she said.
