THINGS are definitely looking up for the tourism sector here, if brand-new airline routes to theIslandare anything to go by.

Nearly a dozen links have been added in the last year, including those fromMoscow(Aeroflot),Amsterdam(Corendon tour operator),Paris(Iberia),Osloand Gatwick (Norwegian and SAS),Belfast(Jet2) andNantes(Volotea).

And from 1st April next year, British Airways will be operating flights toTenerife from Gatwick five times a week, in direct competition with several airlines there.

The company will also introduce a twice-weekly Gatwick flight to Lanzarote next summer.

Upbeat Tenerife Tourism Minister Carlos Alonso Rodriguez said: “We are delighted that BA has chosen to launch this weekly link to Tenerife South.

“It will enable us to capture an important, premium-niche market, as BA will be the first operator on the route to offer a full Business Class service.”

Alonso, together with Tenerife Tourism chief Miguel Angel Santos, this week hosted a presentation to 20 five-star establishments, travel agencies, broadcasters and conference organisers, outlining details of the new Gatwick link.

The Tourism Minister said these increased connections were giving strength and support toTenerifeas a competitive tourist destination.

The Gatwick flight will be operated by 124-seater BA aircraft, which include 25 seats in business class. This, said Alonso, will encourage the arrival of affluent visitors.

He added: “A route with these features is among the main demands in relation to theUKmarket made by four and five-star hotels on theIsland, and Tenerife Tourism had been working on it for some time.

“The connection to Gatwick will help strengthen us as a tourist destination in a market in which our main source is tourism, with 1.68 million visitors welcomed in 2011, which was 16.4% more than the previous year.”
