THEY turned out by the thousand, mostly dressed in pink, to ensure that Sunday’s Walk for Life was another rousing success.

Tenerife’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness fund-raiser took place on Sunday, from the Magma Centre, via Las Americas and the coastal route, to the Plaza de Pescador in Los Cristianos.

And the 2,300 registered walkers – up by some 300 on last year’s numbers – plus those who did not register – have so far raised in excess of 16,000 euros, with more pledged to swell the charity coffers.

As usual, it was organised jointly by the municipalities of Arona and Adeje.

And again, it served to reaffirm the magnificent commitment by residents here in the South to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and the Association of Women Affected by Breast Cancer (Ámate), who will share the proceeds.

Apart from the walk, more funds rolled in from those taking part in an 800m sponsored swim on the beach by Arona Gran Hotel across the bay to Los Cristianos.

The colourful scenes were supported by hundreds of well-wishers, who also made donations along the route.

As ever, the focus was on bringing awareness to people of the importance of detecting breast cancer early, and to show solidarity with those affected, and their families.

Chief organiser Brigitte Gypen said: “It was a great, great day and we had a fantastic time.

“We fully understand that times are tough for everyone, yet many people, organisations and sponsors gave so generously, and we are most grateful.”

She added: “Thanks to the increasing participation year after year, we can all do our bit to fight cancer in this way.”
