MORE than 25,000 people, according to data provided by the local police in Adeje, attended on Sunday the celebration of San Sebastian, including more than 60 horses with their riders, a camel, sheep, goats, donkeys, dogs, etc. all received the blessing of the saint.
The horse show was definitely the highlight of this day, as every year it attracted the attention of many people on the shore to see first hand the skill of the riders when the horses enter the water.
The day passed off without incident and was hailed a great success.
According to historian John Bethencourt Alfonso (1847-1913), the beach was already a place of worship for the Guanches, where they held prayers and processions led by guadameņes (priests).
Here also appeared at the beginning of the conquest the Virgin of the Incarnation, as Fray Alonso de Espinosa cites in his book “History of Our Lady of Candelaria”.
The first references to the cult of San Sebastianin Adeje appeared in the late sixteenth century. Initially what was worshipped was a picture of the saint, which is currently in the Church of St. Ursula.
According to tradition, from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century the festival was organised by the residents of Adeje. Then in the 1940s, the Brotherhood of Farmers and Growers Association was responsible for organising, awarding prizes to the best cattle. The celebration was to go down to the saint from the parish of St. Ursula in Adeje to Enramada beach.
This festival promotes a meeting in which young and old relive a tradition involving residents of the island
